a new appreciation of the human voice
By Geoff
Although aimed primarily at researchers and practitioners in the field, for whom it seems an invaluable resource, this book is also of interest to anyone who uses or listens to voice; that is, virtually everyone. People tend to take their voices for granted. The authors' descriptions of the intricate, exquisite processes of vocal production and perception and its manifold implications in interpersonal communication give rise to a whole new appreciation. Interspersed throughout the erudite text are numerous sidebar notes containing anecdotes and other related information of general interest. The authors also employ well-chosen humor, like a cartoon showing a blackboard with a complicated mathematical equation containing as one step, "then a miracle occurs" to illustrate one of a series of mental processes in voice perception which is not well understood. Another example: a metaphor featuring the fox and hedgehog story is cutely invoked to distinguish familiar and unfamiliar voice perception. Also included are references to illustrative sound files, featuring persons actually speaking, which are available on the book's website.

The authors cover voice studies from as many different angles as one can imagine (indeed more than I could imagine), addressing issues relevant to a variety of disparate occupations and activities. As an attorney, I found of special interest the discussions related to the reliability of ear witness testimony and the role of voice analysis in lie detection. Also, the extensive treatment of vocal production in singing was fascinating and quite useful to me as a singer. Anyone working in these or related fields, such as acting and public speakiing, will find the book edifying and useful.

Elegantly crafted by a pair of preeminent experts in the field, this book is awesome in the breadth and depth of its coverage and in the great body of interdisciplinary research it marshals. It is also awe-inspiring, evoking in the reader a sense of the magnificence of the voice. It underscores how the voice, coupled with language, is what makes us human.

Speaks to Everyone
By Spch Path
Foundations does a wonderful job of delineating voice at its most fundamental AND complex level. This textbook is understandable and readable for both the laymen as well as voice and speech specialists. Kreiman and Sidtis do a spectacular job with lacing each chapter with poetic language and humor-not an easy thing to do with the topics outlined in the book. Personal favorite chapter: Can we hear what a speaker looks like? Very interesting research questions and subsequent findings. I would recommend this book to your professor,speech-language pathologist, milk man, and any epistemologist you know, for this book appeals to all types of readers! Definitely won't sell this one back!

Changes your view of the world
By Ron St. John
Foundations of Voice Studies reduces the field of formal voice study to 397 pages for the benefit of scholars and professionals not otherwise familiar with the research work in this area. An interdisciplinary approach of this sort is arguably the most valuable contribution a scholar can make, offering cross-fertilization into other fields. Psychologists, personnel managers, actors, broadcasters, attorneys, teachers, etc. make everyday use of analyzing and controlling communication by the non-word aspects of vocal production ("prosody" seems like the handiest single term for the phenomenon), and yet as thoroughly as we are enmeshed in this aspect of human communication we rely on common sense and guesswork. That there is formal study into prosody means that our uninformed guesswork can be improved by a review of the results of that research.

In any interdisciplinary study an author will face a paradox in that the same simplification that makes the material accessible to outsiders will be something of a betrayal to the cognoscenti. Kreiman and Sidtis edge toward faithfulness to the nuance of their specific field and away from the sort of oversimplification that would reduce their work to a pop-psychology fun-fact fluff piece for general consumption. This is an appropriate choice, but it also means that you need graduate-school reading skills to penetrate the text and uncover the epiphanies that will be useful to your own world.

My first breathless revelation was to appreciate what should be obvious that so much of communication involves aspects of prosody not captured in simple written words on a page. This was to me a wake-up call that in producing written advocacy (I'm at attorney) I should make liberal use of punctuation, contrasting fonts, page layouts, subheadings, and footnotes to approximate the clues I could be giving were I always given the luxury of presenting my points verbally.

The big takeaway from this book is the fact that people tend to overestimate their ability to identify specific voices, emotional states, truthfulness, and personality. A similar point is made that lie-detection and voice-print machinery is significantly less reliable than imagined. Perhaps these observations are what relegate the work to academia rather than pop-consumption, as genuine science is the dull world of realistic ambivalence and not the fun world of magic machines and formulae.
