Chuck Easttom is a security consultant, author, and trainer. He has authored fourteen other books on programming, Web development, security, and Linux. Chuck holds more than 28 different industry certifications including CISSP, CEH, CHFI, ECSA, CIW Security Analyst, MCSE, MCSA, MCDBA, MCAD, Server+, and more. He has served as a subject matter expert for the Computer Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) in the development or revision of four of their certification tests, including the initial creation of their Security+ certification. Defensless Advice

Just looking at the table of contents made my mouth salivate, because of the range of topics covered. Instead of throwing the reader into the wild world of security, Mr. Eastton starts off with chapter one on Networking. The reason why starting off a security book with networking 101 is important is simply because too many people don't understand the engine that runs the network. The author moves on into deeper topics as he progresses the reader through the book but continues to hammer the importance of knowing networking fundamentals throughout the book.

Like many of the Pearson brand books, each chapter ends with some thought provoking questions and he adds some nice exercises. The questions usually cause you to go and reread that portion of the chapter but it's the exercises that really reenforce the overall purpose of the information. The author isn't selling any certification or didn't seem to me to have an agenda other than provide a decent book on information security.

There is a major problem throughout the book; it must have been sitting on a shelf for a long time before it was actually published. I say this for several reasons and with all the respect in the world for an author with 23 certifications under his belt.

1. Mr Easttom calls a certain group of security professionals “Sneakers” when we actually call them “Penetration Tester” or Certificated Ethical Hackers (CEH). This group of folks break down further into red teams, social engineers, competitive business intelligence analysis and other fancy names depending on what they charge per hour and if they actually have a business address. In a nutshell, their job is to locate weaknesses in your network and report them to you.

2. The book starts off by poking hackers in the eye instead of showing the reader the difference between the types of hackers as he does later on in the book. There is a large problem with the organized crime portion of paid hackers. These hackers operate just like any other business except they have malicious intent as their mission statement. Then there are the state-sponsored hackers, the hactivists, the mafia hackers, the corporate espionage hackers and the disgruntled employees to worry about. None of which were really mentioned in the book.

3. Windows XP is discussed chapters before anything about Windows 8 is mentioned. Granted, there are differing opinions on how many computers are still operating Windows XP but there should be more focus on here and now operating systems.

4. The author talks about Internet Explorer (IE) and Netscape over Firefox, Safari or Chrome. The author links Firefox to Netscape but doesn't even mention any of the security/privacy issues surrounding IE. If you want secure browsing you need to be looking at Tails or Chrome, certainly not IE.

I was surprised to see the author bring up so many commercial products as viable solutions when there are quite a few open source products that have a better track record. Mr. Easttom does discuss what “Open Source” means but leads the reader astray by comparing the source code of volunteers versus closed source code of for-profit companies. Open source software is often just as good or better than commercial software because the people building the open software are doing so in an open environment where others can see and fix vulnerabilities before the product is released. Commercial software is propriety and difficult to detect flaws or vulnerabilities until the product has reached the market.

If the reader were looking for true countermeasures for their network they would be looking for defensive tools like Armitage with Metasploit, Nessus, Nmap, Kali, or even Fedora Security Spins. Snort is given a brief nod for it's intrusion detection capabilities but nothing is mentioned about Wireshark or other packet filtering packages. OphCrack is old news compared to using Python scripts for SQL injections and attacks on Apache servers.

It was nice to see the book covered some Linux security basics. Yes, the Bash vulnerability is a major media affair at the moment but it doesn't bother other 'nix that use Dash like Debian. Then there is big news about USB firmware being compromised. I would not expect that to be in the book because that is fairly new information. The problem is the author didn't tell the reader where to find the Common Vulnerability Enumeration (CVE) database. The CVE is the master collection of every vulnerability detected, the severity level and the impact it would have on your system. A book such as this needs to show the reader where to look for all the dirty little secrets.

The best place to find hacker news is by going into those areas and see what is shaping the next level of attacks. You can keep your hands clean and stick to Lifehacker.com and Network World or you can tighten up your browser security to head over to Hackin9.org, Offensive-Security.com, git-hub.org, Packetstorm.com, or Darknet.org.

Overall, I wish the book went into defending and countermeasures of a network. Instead, it was more of a dictionary description with very few tips or tricks. There were good questions and some great exercises but none of them would help out against an Advanced Persistent Threat (APT). APT wasn't even used as a term in the book. If you are looking for a sword to defend your network, this book is a butter-knife.

Basic intro to Network Security with dated product info

This is very introductory textbook on the topic of Network Security that’s copyrighted 2014 with First Printing in October 2013.Yet, in Chapter 4, “Firewall Practical Applications”, the author uses as an example the Cisco PIX 515E firewall for which Cisco announced End of Life in 2008. That does not make too much sense. Also, the price of the PIX 515E in the book is quoted as between $1800 and $2600 depending on whether it’s new or refurbished. It’s a real stretch that in 2014 or even in 2013 a PIX 515E would have cost that much. As of the writing of this review, February 2015, you can pick up a PIX 515E on E-Bay for as little as $40.

Something does not make sense about this publication given its copyright date. Without exception, all of the chapter references listed in Appendix A are dated 2004 or before. While no one denies that security has a long history and many security principles are simply timeless, a publication on Network Defenses copyrighted 2014 ought to have a sprinkle of more recent references, especially given the evolution of networking and security threats over the last decade.

Having slammed the book for its dated product examples (there are a few more than just the PIX 515E), I would consider it a nice compilation of introductory info on a range of security topics, including encryption and firewall fundamentals, assessing system security, security standards and more. For someone entering the field of network security it is a reasonable starter, reinforced by exercises and multiple choice questions at the end of each chapter. But for a Security Professional, well, if you forgot your security and networking basics, scan through this book for a refresher.

This book was a good refresher about information security concepts. I'd recommend it to anyone considering a career change to the world of InfoSec or to IT professionals wanting to protect their networks better.

I use this over and over

I love this book and I have used it over and over for years. Who cares if it doesn't match blueprints? Simply measure your room and do the math. I don't have blueprints to try and match - I'm just a woman trying to redo rooms in a house. There are 215 punch out pieces of furniture and if they don't fit your EXACT sofa you can cut them down to size.

I am a perfectionist and need everything to be measured exact. I do not cut corners and I have used this book for at least 5 complete room makeovers. It has been invaluable and many furniture pieces were NOT purchased because I knew they wouldn't fit in the room - all thanks to this really inexpensive layout kit. $5? It's worth the investment many times over.

We used this to help a friend with her move to an apartment. It's pretty good. We had to trim or add to a few items since the sizes didn't match up. I wish they had some generic sizes that you could choose from.

A good starter item, maybe...

I wasn't as pleased with this item as I thought I would be. It was purchased to use for our homeschooled 16 year old. At the time of this purchase, we also purchased "Home Quick Planner", which was the real find for us. I purchased this with the intention of using it as a supplement to the "Home Quick Planner" after seeing it listed on Amazon as a "goes together" type of item. Unfortunately, the "Home Quick Planner" was scaled to 1/2"=1', and this item was scaled at 1/4"=1', so they really aren't good together.

I was also wondering why they have the subtitle "From Stencils and Notepaper to Flowers and Napkin Folding", since that was not in MY edition, and my edition looks just like the picture in the Amazon ad.

Also, the "Home Quick Planner" has detailed "window cling-type" stickers that you can take off and put back on easily, which is nicer than these cardstock punch-outs, which are very plain. I would suggest that you "look inside", on the Amazon listing, which I didn't do since I impulsively purchased it when Amazon listed it as a "goes together" item. After viewing the "look inside", you may decide that this is just what you want, and the price is very low. It may be nice for somebody who wants to invest a small amount of money to try their abilities at layouts. You may be very happy with it.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND

When purchasing an item I always search for great quality, great reviews, without putting a dent in my wallet. Item arrived promptly with Prime. I read this book to my son eight years ago, and to this day it is our favorite book. It is just such an amazing story, that its a book we will never forget. This is our third copy. The only thing I was disappointed about, is that the cover I received is not the cover pictured, and that was the original cover of the book I had read my son. Would have been nice if the seller would have advertised the product as having a different cover art. Especially for those that are buying it for sentimental reasons. However, the story is superb and I would highly recommend.

The Multiple Perspectives

Elephant Run was an exceptionally good book to read. Some parts were emotional, however others were confusing, because the dialogue didn’t contain enough detail about the cultural traditions. This story gives details of a Burmese person’s life, including the Mahouts, and other engaging Burmese cultural traditions. I enjoyed learning about the characters as they matured, and understanding the multiple perspectives of WWII. As a result of the war, the lines blurred between protagonists and antagonists. Even though this book is confusing, we liked it because it has a great ending, and can teach several lessons.

A great and informative read..

This is a young adult Novel about WWII and about a boy named Nick Freestone, who at the start of the book in 1941, is living with his mother and her Husband in London. The apartement where they are living is hit one night by bombs and destroyed. His mother, decides the situation in England is too unstable, and sends Nick to live with his father in Burma, hoping he will be safer living on the family's teak plantation. Shortly after arriving, the Japanese invade Burma and the action begins. This writer, writes to any age and I found the story fascinating and adventurous.

The Best Book on Financial Institutions. Period.

This is probably the best book in risk management available today. This is due to the combination of breadth and depth of the text. The author gently introduces the student to an important subject and explains with pains how to manage each and every kind of risk. The two chapters on Interest rate risk are absolutely fabulous. There is a sense of continuity because the concepts you learn in one chapter has applications in another. The problems at the end of the chapters are are also challenging and will require an in-depth understanding of the subject. This book is the ultimate.

Excellent introduction to risk management

The book is very good and it starts describing the special nature of financial institutions and the industry. Then, in the second part you have complete chapters relating to every risk management: interest rate risk (maturity, repricing gaps and duration focuses, liquidity (e.g.maturity ladder), market risk (standarized Basel Committee and VaR approaches) credit risk (including Basel Committe standarized approach, defalult risk models like credit scoring), operating costs and technology risk, FX risk, sovereign risk.
In the last part there is a good section which describes how to manage risks , including liabilty and liquidity management,deposit insurance, capital adequacy, geographic diversification, derivatives, the new credit risk management techniques and securitization.
I had the chance to have Profesor Saunders as a risk management teacher and I only say that as his classes, his book is great. It shows you the best introduction to risk management. It discusses about financial institutions (banks, insurance and securities). That book just helped me to see financial institutions under the risk focus. I really recommend this book to understand risk management.

A comprehensive book on risk management from a financial institution's perspective

The text covers everything you would expect from a book about risk management: credit risk, IR risk, derivatives, securitization, etc. In my opinion the authors have done a nice job of explaining various models/concepts/ideas in a clear and concise fashion.

It's also noteworthy to mention that if you are using this book you're probably using it in a class. Heads up - the chapter problem solution keys provided by your professor from the publisher (the MSWord files the publisher distributes) contain a surprisingly large number of trivial errors here -- ie. incorrect algebra and other errors. The problems are otherwise helpful in terms of understanding the material nonetheless.

Cramer, famous for appearing on CNBC as the "wild excitable guy [with]... a big mouth and lots of passion talking authoritatively about how you could make money by getting on the Net," recounts his turbulent dual career as hedge fund manager and media pundit. Cramer tells of his lifelong obsession with the market, beginning with childhood scenes of poring over daily stock listings. The story kicks into high gear once he starts juggling his law school course load so he can spend as much time as possible trading (over the phone, in the pre-Internet '80s). After that, the narrative's pace never relents from depictions of Cramer's early days at Goldman Sachs through the launch of his own fund, which led to magazine columns, a near-constant presence on TV, and TheStreet.com. Cramer's description of the financial news Web site's launch is ruthless, not just toward the executives whose scheming and mismanagement, he says, undermined TheStreet.com's success, but toward himself for hiring them and temporarily destroying his long-standing friendship with publishing fixture Marty Peretz. Cramer is equally self-recriminating about the effect his fanatical trading had on his personal life, but clearly still loves to linger over every major deal of his career (and a lot of the minor ones), even perhaps especially if they blew up in his face. This is a lively, informative portrait of the highest levels of finance and media in the last decade.

Not a guide book but useful nonetheless

Even though this book does not provide any trading methods or techniques you can use, as evident from the title, I still found it useful and inspirational. As anyone will tell you trading is not easy and to be successful in trading requires many attributes which can be derived from reading this book. First, a trader must be committed as Jim Cramer was to the point of sacrificing time with his family even to the point of missing his daughter’s soccer practice to stay at the office for important work. While I do not agree with going this far in commitment to trading, it is still important to take trading as serious as a business to be successful. Another message I got from the book is “know your strengths and weaknesses”. If you are more within your element trading stocks rather than options or Forex then stick with stocks. This is evident in the book by the fact that Jim Cramer did not hesitate to seek advice of attorneys even though he was an attorney himself. He was able to recognize that this was an area that he was not the best at especially in certain disciplines. In addition interacting with other successful traders is also useful to improve your results if at all possible. Jim Cramer used his contacts as an ivy league graduate to further his career , and in a similar manner a trader can use the exchange of ideas with other more successful traders to refine and improve his game.
Although Jim’s inflated ego emerges at certain points in the text, most highly successful individual have a level of confidence that is often seen as egotistical. I would use this book to learn from the author's experiences and to refine psychological aspects of my trading approach by identifying strength and weakness areas

I was recommended this book by someone who manages a solid amount of money and hates Jim Cramer. When I asked him why he hates him he said "because he is no longer the guy he used to be" and then referred me to this book.

To put it simply, this book feels very....raw to say the least. Everything Cramer says is very personal, engaging and easy to sympathize with. Everything Cramer went through while running his hedge fund is covered. All the criticism and accusations he went through, the tough times when he felt stuck with low returns, the issues he faced when Long Term capital management went under etc.

This book also covers a lot of other stuff like how he got started, his tumultuous relationship with his first investor, and his obsession with making the stock market a hobby/passion for the average america.

Overall this book does a good job of expressing how hard working, passionate, and borderline obsessed hedge fund manager who outperform are, while showing off their vulnerable life can be outside of their secretive world

intriguing, humble and relatable

Essentially Cramer's autobiography, I found a refreshing degree of humility and candidness about a life many might characterize in different terms who didn't read the book.

The chapters on starting "the street" were a little long, but the rest of the book was a thrilling and educating read. I have been up and down in my trading and I can only imagine what it would be like with the stakes amplified with moving lots of other people's money. I really feel like he captured a unique experience and placed it in perspective. He brought the reader personally through making and losing of lots of money, his shortcomings, triumph and luck, and his resulting catharsis.

A beautifully penned story about the market from a good and likeable guy whose made mistakes and grown from them.

This book aims to bring together the areas of macroalgal taxonomy with strategies and methods used to characterise marine bioactive compounds. In addition, it looks at the importance of correct taxonomic characterization. It also describes applications of bioactive compounds from the marine environment and discusses how marine bioactive compounds represent a major market application in food and other industries.� It provides examples of bioactive compounds isolated from marine resources.

Examples are given as to how bioactive compounds have been used in functional food formulations and pharmaceutical applications, and how they alter biological activity to provide therapeutic benefits, nutritional values and health protection.

It looks at the screening process for identification of bioactive molecules including computing methods for efficient in silico analysis, and describes different production methods used for bioactive compound isolation and identification. Furthermore, this book provides an insight into the market opportunities that exist for the identification and commercialization of new marine bioactive compounds.� It also highlights regulations in the US, Europe, Japan and China regarding health or novel food claims for functional food products.�

About the Author
Maria Hayes is a natural products chemist based at the Teagasc Food Research Centre, in Dublin, Ireland. She is the current Marine Functional Foods Research Initiative scientific project manager and is involved in the harvesting of bioactive compounds from seaweeds, marine rest raw materials and microalgae. NutraMara is a €5 million project funded by the Marine Institute (MI), Ireland and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (DAFF), Ireland.

Um livro que coloca a nu os erros que v�m sendo cometidos na prescri��o de treinos que visam o emagrecimento e a perda de gordura, e que indica qual o caminho a seguir e quais as melhores metodologias para a obten��o de resultados satisfat�rios! Sem d�vida o melhor livro que j� li sobre este tema.

Sem d�vidas o melhor livro sobre o assunto, com uma vis�o corajosa e moderna sobre as abordagens usadas para emagrecimento. Para aqueles que j� leram a edi��o anterior, a nova edi��o vem com um cap�tulo sobre AEJ al�m de novas refer�ncias ainda mais contempor�neas

Diferenca entre emagrecer e perder peso

Quem comprou esse livro fui eu, Marcela, pela conta do meu pai Manuel.

Livro extremamente interessante para todas as pessoas que querem entender quimica e biologicamente o que acontece no seu corpo quando vc faz diferentes tipos de exercicios com o objetivo de perder gordura. Muitas pessoas nao entendem a diferenca entre perder peso na balanca e reamente emagrecer, e esse livro diferencia bem as duas coisas e prova de uma vez por todas que aerobicos nao emagrecem como muitas pessoas podem imaginar. O grande diferencial pra mim sao todos os testes clinicos que o Paulo apresenta no livro (com todas as referencias, entao se vc duvidar pode pesquisar). Ele nao se baseia apenas no conhecimento dele e na sua experiencia, mas sim em testes reais realizados/publicados pelos mais diversos autores ao redor do mundo. Eu realmente fiquei impressionada com a quantidade de testes que ele apresenta no decorrer do livro.

Este livro pode se mostrar util para muito pessoas que estao fazendo dieta, se matando por horas na academia e mesmo assim nao veem resultados pq nao fazem musculacao. O unico "defeito" pra mim eh que o livro eh mto claro no que nao funciona e no que vc nao deve fazer, mas peca em te apresentar um plano claro do que fazer para atingir seus objetivos - provavelmente emagrecer para 90% das pessoas que compram o livro. Isso vc encontra no outro livro dele, "Bases Cientificas do Treinamento de Hipertrofia" que tambem comprei e estou lendo agora. Deixarei uma review quando terminar.
