Is there life after big brother?
By Erik Bloom
Despite its title, this book is not really a sequel to George Orwell's 1984 (1984). It is a satirical look at what happens when an authoritarian government collapsesm, based loosely on the Hungarian and Czech uprisings. The story, complied by a future historian living in Hong Kong, brings together primary source material on what happens in the months after the death of Big Brother. The primary source material is largely taken from the principal characters in 1984 (Winston Smith, Julia, O'brien, etc.) complied by an increasing deranged historian.

Of course, from a purist perspective this is impossible. Big brother cannot die and I do not think that the structure of INGSOC can be so easily dismantaled. But this is not the point...the book looks at the conflict in a revolutionary society as different factions vie for power and for their idelogical goals.

Not a great book but an interesting (and short) read.

A satirical sequel of a satire
By Minerva
This book is really meant to follow 1984 as those who are not familiar with the Orwellian classic will not be able to follow the plot enough to enjoy it to it's fullest. I found it sharp, hilarious, and a great read.

Pleasantly Surprised
By Data
I was debating whether to give this ebook 5 stars or 4 stars. I think my perfect rating would be 4.5 stars. I went with 5 stars however for the following reasons.

PROSs
This book was short but to the point. I didn't get a lot of mumbo jumbo. It delved right into covered calls. Moreover, this book used real world examples. So, you won't see the author trying to sell stock on XYZ company. Rather, the author picked one company (KO) and stuck with KO for the remainder of the book. I liked that.

The links that the author provided were very helpful. Even though I am writing this review in August 2015, I was able to go back and see where the author got his numbers from and was able to arrive at the same numbers.

In my opinion, the biggest pro to this book, and one of the reasons why I went with the 5 stars instead of the 4, was that the author provided his exact approach to how he picked stocks (I didn't have to purchase that information separately), and he even suggested a few stocks that, at the time of his writing, qualified based on his criteria. I've tried reading a lot of information about covered call writings and either, in those cases, the books or articles dealt with theoretical numbers or even if they dealt with actual numbers, I haven't found many that talks specifically, step-by-step, how they go about selecting the stocks. This book does. It was simple and again to the point and that's what ultimately make me give this a 5 star rating.

CONS

Although I gave this book 5 stars, it is by no means perfect. I really liked the fact that the author picked Coca Cola (KO) and used that throughout the book. However, I thought the content, though on point, was a bit too concise. It would have been awesome if the author picked another company or two, maybe in a different sector, just for comparison.

Also, there is little advice on how best to manage a position once entered and even an exit strategy. For the advice that was there, the author doesn't do the best job of explaining the material in the most simplest of languages and so sometimes, a beginner such as myself have to reread the material.

In addition, although the author mentioned one broker, there was no real focus on how to select a broker, etc. In other words, this book was very narrowly focused on the covered call strategy (which is not necessarily a bad thing) and not so much about investing overall, risk management, or any of those other important concepts that one should know before investing.

Finally, the bonus chapter about how to do covered calls using a small account I thought was a bit more complex and confusing that the actual content in the book.

SUMMARY

I think the positives vastly outweigh the negatives. That being said, consider the price of the book. I don't think the author expects you to pick up this book, read it today and start investing in covered calls tomorrow. May he does, I don't know. I think anyone interested in covered call writing should do their due diligence first. I can say this much. I have been interested in covered call writing for a few months and never felt like I had the courage or adequate education to just do it. After reading this book, at least I have a starting point on how to pick stocks. Armed with this information along with all the other reading and/or research I've done, I feel as if I am ready to start trading a small position to learn the process.

Did you know that selling covered calls is more profitable in “flat to slightly up” markets?
By Karin
I was really happy to purchase this Kindle book on covered calls but also then to obtain the free Kindle book on momentum stocks. As Matt suggests, it is easy to make money with covered calls, but it requires easy to follow directions. This book provides them. Personally, I trade options: I have my way to find stocks but they are higher priced ones than what I would choose to use for covered calls. Finding a step by step process for lower priced stocks and now applying this knowledge is very helpful. Did you know that selling covered calls is more profitable in “flat to slightly up” markets? That is just one of his profit making hints. Surprised? I was.

Three more (amongst others) benefits I received from the author’s book: 1) the book was short and to the point! 2) The author really trades! And has for 20 years. 3) Matt actually responded to my questions with practical advice! Nice!

I recommend this book.

Worth every penny. EZ to read, basic, clear & concise. Explains why 'Calls' are referred to as Calls -- same with 'Puts."
By KenW
Mr. Kratter connected with me -- like a 6th Grader. Covered Calls Made Easy will take approximately 1 to 1.5 hours to read. I use a 2nd Generation Kindle -- no problem with Charts or small print. The powerful content was delivered, without 'talking-down' or failing to immediatly define new terms. From the beginning, Mr. Kratter clearly and concisely defines terms and concepts on the same page presented and reveals the meaning, behind the terms, of Calls and Puts. It is good to know why Calls are referred to as 'Calls," and why Puts are referred to as 'Puts.' It makes sense, but after much Options related reading, Mr. Kratter is the first author to offer an explanation. Mr. Kratter defines the three possible outcomes of Covered Call trading, advises the reader of what happens to the Covered Calls during a stock market crash, how to find the best stock selections for the Covered Calls and how to get started. Chapter Six teases the reader to learn more by gently introducing an Options trading concept that does not involve currently owned stock. There are many Brokers in the Options universe. Investors Business Daily recently rated Options Brokers. Get signed up at a Broker, read this book a few times, engage in the pursuit of additional Options knowledge, familiarize yourself with your Broker's trading platform and get busy in some paper trading (experiencing trading without risking real $$$). Good luck!

The Fire This Time: A New Generation Speaks about Race, by Jesmyn Ward

National Book Award winner Jesmyn Ward takes James Baldwin’s 1963 examination of race in America, The Fire Next Time, as a jumping off point for this groundbreaking collection of essays and poems about race from the most important voices of her generation and our time.

In light of recent tragedies and widespread protests across the nation, The Progressive magazine republished one of its most famous pieces: James Baldwin’s 1962 “Letter to My Nephew,” which was later published in his landmark book, The Fire Next Time. Addressing his fifteen-year-old namesake on the one hundredth anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, Baldwin wrote: “You know and I know, that the country is celebrating one hundred years of freedom one hundred years too soon.”

Award-winning author Jesmyn Ward knows that Baldwin’s words ring as true as ever today. In response, she has gathered short essays, memoir, and a few essential poems to engage the question of race in the United States. And she has turned to some of her generation’s most original thinkers and writers to give voice to their concerns.

The Fire This Time is divided into three parts that shine a light on the darkest corners of our history, wrestle with our current predicament, and envision a better future. Of the eighteen pieces, ten were written specifically for this volume.

In the fifty-odd years since Baldwin’s essay was published, entire generations have dared everything and made significant progress. But the idea that we are living in the post-Civil Rights era, that we are a “post-racial” society is an inaccurate and harmful reflection of a truth the country must confront. Baldwin’s “fire next time” is now upon us, and it needs to be talked about.

Review
“A half century ago James Baldwin, the prophet in the American wilderness, delivered The Fire Next Time—as complex a reckoning with race, morality and human nature as we have seen. Jesmyn Ward has pulled together in this collection you now hold the incisive, sage, angry and deeply complex voices of a new generation, responding to many of the same questions that confronted us in 1963. To Baldwin's call we now have a choral response—one that should be read by every one of us committed to the cause of equality and freedom.”
—Jelani Cobb, historian

“In 1963, we were poised on a precipice, intellectually, spiritually, politically primed for the change we knew had to come. Now, some half-century later, we are again at the precipice. We are dismayed and disheartened to find ourselves here, aghast that the rules and players have changed but the game, somehow, is the same. What do we do, this post-Civil Rights generation, in the face of the same injustice, dressed in different clothes, coded in different laws? In The Fire This Time, a new generation of black writers speak with the ‘fierce urgency of now.’”
—Ayana Mathis, novelist

“Fires destroy things…burns them up…makes ashes for us all…But fires also keep us warm…give us a glow to sit by…to tell ancestry stories to the children against the rhythmic crackle of history…to make love to against the glow. The generation of segregations gave us The Fire Next Time…we broke down those walls…The generation after segregation gives us the water to mix with the ashes to build…something…anything all…in the words of Margaret Walker…our own. This is a book to pick up and tuck under our hearts to see what we can build.”
—Nikki Giovanni, poet

"Timely contributions to an urgent national conversation."
—Kirkus Reviews

"An absolutely indispensable anthology."
—Booklist(starred review)

"Ward's remarkable achievement is the gift of freshly minted perspectives on a tale that may seem old and twice-told. Readers in search of conversations about race in America should start here."
—Publishers Weekly(starred review)

"Groundbreaking."

Have you read "Between the World & Me"? Read this next.
By Englewood Review of Books
If you have read Ta-Nehisi Coates’ National Book Award-winning BETWEEN THE WORLD AND ME, this new collection of reflections on race by some of the finest writers working today should be next on your reading list. Contributors include editor Jesmyn Ward (also a National Book Award-winner), former U.S. Poet Laureate Natasha Trethewey, and novelist Edwidge Danticat. THE FIRE THIS TIME, inspired by James Baldwin’s THE FIRE NEXT TIME, aims to be a “book that would reckon with the fire of despair and rage and fierce, protective love currently sweeping through the streets and campuses of America. A book that would gather new voices in one place … to dissent, to call to account, to witness, to reckon.” This work succeeds in all these things that it sets out to do, and more. It is a gripping lament of the past and present of the racial situation in the U.S., as well as a cautiously hopeful look toward the future.

"My only sin is my skin, ... What did I do, to be so black and blue?"
By W Perry Hall
"My only sin is my skin, ... What did I do, to be so black and blue?"
Fats Waller, "(What Did I Do to Be So) Black and Blue?""

The title of this choric collection of prismatic prose and poetry convoking for equality, compassion and freedom from fear, written by some of today's prominent and talented African-American writers, derives from the title of James Baldwin's groundbreaking The Fire Next Time which he ended with the fiery memorable passage:

"If we...the relatively conscious whites and the relatively conscious blacks, who must, like lovers, insist on, or create, the consciousness of others--do not falter in our duty now, we may be able, handful that we are, to end the racial nightmare, and achieve our country, and change the history of the world. If we do not dare everything, the fulfillment of that prophecy, re-created from the Bible in song by the slave, is upon us: God gave Noah the rainbow sign, No more water, the fire next time!"

I will never know the pain and fear and rage felt by African-Americans, including the artists who contributed pieces to this innovative anthology full of timely contributions to the current critical conversation on racial relations in the U.S. Nonetheless, if this book can be a bridge to better, fuller understanding by me (which, I think, it most definitely is) and others similarly situated, such a comprehension of the unknown being, after all, one of the main goals of artists and writers, then maybe it will help us all play some part in changing ourselves and perhaps the world for the common good.

Jesmyn Ward, the editor and an author of parts of this book, won the National Book Award for Fiction in 2011 for her novel Salvage the Bones. She begins the book with her hope that:

"this book makes each one of you, dear readers, feel as if we are sitting together, you and me and Baldwin and... all the serious, clear-sighted writers here--and that we are composing our story together. That we are writing an epic wherein black lives carry a worth, wherein black boys can walk to the store and buy candy without thinking they will die, wherein black girls can have a bad day and be mouthy without being physically assaulted by a police officer, wherein cops see twelve-year-old black boys playing with fake guns as silly kids and not homicidal maniacs, wherein black women can stop to ask for directions without being shot in the face by paranoid white homeowners.

I burn, and I hope."

Ms. Ward grew up about an hour from me. She wrote an affecting essay entitled "Cracking the Code," which really made me think about many of us in the United States who don't really know their full ancestry, including me, how this country is truly a melting pot, as it reminded me of how ridiculous and hateful it is that some people still judge others by the color of their skin. In it, she discusses a relatively inexpensive genetic testing company called 23andMe, that she and some other family members used not long ago to find out their ancestry. She grew up as "black" but her dad looked as much Native American as black, and she has relatively light skin for an African-American. Anyway, she talks about how she felt upon finding out that's she's more European than sub-Saharan African; specifically, 40% European-mix of British, Irish, French, German, Scandinavian, Iberian, Italian, and Ashkenazi-- 32% sub-Saharan African, a quarter Native American and less than 1% North African.

Another essay I found particularly thought-provoking, in a book full of poignant essays and verse, was one called "Blacker Than Thou," by Kevin Young, considering the question of Rachel Dolezal:

"It would be one thing...if in her house, to her pillow or family, Dolezal said she felt black... It’s when that somehow translates to what she does, when she teaches black studies as if she’s a black person—not a teacher, but a mind reader—that it becomes a problem. She wears the mask not to hide but to gain authority over the very thing she claims to want to be. How very white of her!"

This anthology has improved my understanding on matters of race and thus effected a change in me. I highly recommend it for anyone seeking to gain different perspectives on race and racial relations in our current political climate.

Powerful and Relevant
By dictionaryfan
This book is a must read for anyone who wants insight into the status of race relations in the US today. It was designed as a response to James Baldwin's The Fire Next Time, which was published in 1962 and is still as relevant today as it was then. While there have been some improvements, there haven't been nearly enough. One of the aspects of the book that I enjoyed was the use of stories and how these demonstrated the strong hold that the past has on our present. Simply because it's behind us doesn't mean that its gone.

Some of the essays in this volume reflect upon the past, while others discuss current events, and a few look to the future. All of the pieces are well-written narratives on the different ways that racism has impacted our culture. Too often we view prejudice as something that happens in other corners of our country, but like the experience that Wendy Walter's described in her essay on looking for one of the oldest negro burial sites in America: we discover that it's right beneath us and we've been driving over it without noticing the whole time.

Note: I was given a free ARC of this title from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Killing Monsters: Why Children Need Fantasy, Super Heroes, and Make-Believe Violence, by Gerard Jones

Children choose their heroes more carefully than we think. From Pokmon to the rapper Eminem, pop-culture icons are not simply commercial pied pipers who practice mass hypnosis on our youth. Indeed, argues the author of this lively and persuasive paean to the power of popular culture, even trashy or violent entertainment gives children something they need, something that can help both boys and girls develop in a healthy way. Drawing on a wealth of true stories, many gleaned from the fascinating workshops he conducts, and basing his claims on extensive research, including interviews with psychologists and educators, Gerard Jones explains why validating our children's fantasies teaches them to trust their own emotions and build stronger selves.

From Publishers Weekly
Violent entertainment is good for kids, and demonizing it can do great harm to their emotional development, claims Jones (Honey, I'm Home!) in this provocative and groundbreaking work. Drawing on his experience as a parent and as a creator of children's cartoons, as well as interviews with dozens of psychologists and educators, Jones forcefully argues that violent video games, movies, music and comics provide a safe fantasy world within which children learn to become familiar with and control the frightening emotions of anger, violence and sexuality. He debunks studies linking violent media with violence in society and argues that children clearly understand the difference between pretend and reality. Providing realistic and helpful advice, Jones says parents need to learn to differentiate between what violent games mean to children and what they mean to adults, and to stop imposing their understanding of them on children. Adults may be horrified at the literal meaning of a video game, but children are far more interested in its emotional meaning; "through identifying with a fantasy figure who displays intense sexuality, wields destructive power, and exudes heroism, kids can help themselves feel more control over these forces." Jones speaks to adult fears of the power of popular culture and cautions that "entertainment has its greatest influence when it's speaking to something that isn't otherwise being addressed in a child's life." To lessen the impact, adults should "model nonaggression, empathy, respect, a clear distinction between fantasy and reality, and the integration of aggression and other scary feelings."

From School Library Journal
Jones's thesis is straightforward: the violence in popular culture is to be embraced rather than feared. In his estimation, it provides a vehicle for objectifying the volatile emotions that young people already experience, presents an opportunity to learn control and to experience power in a culture that perpetuates the helplessness of children and adolescents, and affords a sense of community for those whose limited social skills often result in alienation and loneliness. Adult objections to popular culture violence, the author says, result from failing to recognize that the constructs are fantasy and not asking children about the appeal of action figures, comic books, video games, and rap music. Rather than provide a sequence of logical arguments, Jones uses the 13 chapters to repeat variations on his themes. Employing both anecdotes from his own experience and those of other professionals, and drawing upon existing scientific research, he debunks the "prevailing wisdom" that directly correlates the viewing of violence with violent behavior. Although not an academic, the author has done his homework. He presents his case convincingly, and the concluding notes provide support. Killing Monsters belongs on public library parent shelves and in collections that support teacher training, library science, and the communication arts.

From Library Journal
Jones (Honey, I'm Home!: Sitcoms; Selling the American Dream) here thoughtfully explores the positive developmental aspects of fantasy and shows how it allows children to experiment with and explore various concepts and roles. As children grow, the vehicles chosen for fantasy play change, and the choices are always instructive: "Children want to be strong, secure, and happy. Their fantasies will tell us what they feel they need to attain that, if we pay attention." Jones dissects formal studies, is critical of the "loud, plastic trash marketed to [children]," and observes that "there is no joy sweeter and no satisfaction more unassailable than healthy aggression channeled toward a creative end." Based on interviews with psychologists and educators, on workshops he conducts, and on research, this book will show involved, attuned readers that fantasy in all its forms (including the more passive pursuits of TV, movies, video games, etc.) can be a tool to strengthen and comfort young people instead of just a threat to their sensibilities, as presumed in such shrill books as Dave Grossman and Gloria Degaetano's Stop Teaching Our Kids To Kill: A Call to Action Against TV, Movie and Video Game Violence. Highly recommended. Douglas C. Lord, Connecticut State Lib., Hartford

Great discovery
By JR Hubbard
I recently stumbled across this book while shopping at a bookstore, and it came at a perfect time. I have a 3-and-a-half year old son that enjoys some shows that some people feel are not appropriate for young children. Shows like Power Rangers (his all-time favorite), Pokemon, and a few others.
My son goes to a Montessori School, and we have always been quite happy with him there. One day, the head of the school pulled my wife aside and said we have a problem with my son's behavior. She stated that he was showing "aggressive behavior" and that he was the ring leader of a handful of kids that had the same problem. Our first reaction was shock and a fear that we were bad parents. Coming from someone who deals with kids all the time, you feel they would know what's best. She said that the shows he was watching were causing the problem, and that we should not let him be involved in watching those shows. That's when I started thinking about it. I asked her the next time I saw her to define aggressive behavior. She said that my son and his friends would play fight and do karate on each other. I asked if he actually ever hit anyone, and she said no. I also asked if anyone was ever hurt or if they took the playing beyond just playing. She had no answer. I even asked if they took turns winning and she said yes, and that was part of the problem!
This is when I found Killing Monsters, and I am so glad I did. The things it talks about directly related to me and my relationship with my son. I love when he watches Power Rangers, and puts on every article of clothing he owns to enhance his powerful character. He walks through the house as though he could conquer anything! He also wants us to hug and kiss him during the Barney song, and that shows another soft and incredibly gentle side that my wife and I love. Play fighting and toy swords are my son's favorite, and to have to take that away from him seemed so unnecessary.
I loved this book and read it twice. I have also passed it on to friends with children that have loved it just as much. I am a young man, only 30 years old. There are a lot of parents like myself that were raised around video games and violent movies. Taking that away doesn't solve a problem. It's all about parental involvement and education. This book reinforced what I believe is the key to a healthy child.

This book changed my mind.
By Dr. Deborah Luepnitz
As a psychotherapist and medical school professor, I speak regularly with parents who worry about their kids' taste in entertainment. I have commiserated with them often. After all, weren't the Columbine shooters obsessed with "Doom" and similar fare? Don't images create possibilities? Gerard Jones argues against the prevailing belief that fantasy violence makes kids violent. Close study of the literature shows that teens who watch the most violent entertainment actually commit fewer serious crimes. And among the 18 boys who perpetrated school rampages in recent years, the majority showed no interest in games. Instead of asking the unanswerable: "How does violent entertainment affect kids?" Jones poses 2 more interesting questions: Why do they love what they love? and: What is the place of fantasy violence in a world that condemns it in reality? He uses his teaching experiences and 30 years of social science research to show how children use make believe to master fears and experiment with feeling strong. In "Girl Power" Jones contends that just as girls used to identify with male fantasy figures, boys are now identifying with Lara Croft and other super-heroines. In a culture in which the male imaginary has been standard--something to which girls and women needed to accomodate--this expanding set of possibilities for kids is no small triumph. While the book is targeted to parents, it's also a solid piece of scholarship, and the author is obviously as comfortable with Freud and Bettelheim as he is Batman and Mega Zords. A fine cultural critique informs his argument. ("We don't ask whether game shows predispose our children to greed or love songs to bad relationships." "Killing MOnsters" made me think of James Joyce's hearing the word "imagination" as "the magic nation" (in "Finnegan's Wake.") Gerard Jones reminds us that we're all permanent citizens of that vast and weird republic, sometimes for worse, but much more often for better.

A solution to a deadlocked discussion?
By michaela824
I first heard of this author on a radio interview. I was intrigued by what he said, but what truly struck me was the interviewer's comment afterward; he said, in effect, that all our previous efforts to deal with the power of media and violence in children's lives haven't worked but "maybe this guy has the answer." That caught my interest, because I see so many problem-solving efforts in modern America trapped in fruitless conflicts between two sides (liberal v. conservative, free speech v. watchdogs). Two sides more invested in continuing the conflict and placing blame than making any real change. Until someone steps up with a new solution that pulls together the strengths of both sides and moves the discussion forward.
My interest and hopes were very well borne out by the author's book. I don't like violent media, and I'm inclined even after "Killing Monsters" to believe that it has many negative influences on our society. What Gerard Jones makes clear, however, is that simply asserting its negative effects with increasing anger and fear does do good for anyone. Young people interpret attacks on their popular culture as attacks on them, and so they become only more defensively attached to what we criticize. Censorship is problematic because the young people most fascinated by something forbidden will be the very ones to find it anyway; and, as Jones shows well, if it is forbidden they will be unable to discuss it openly with adults but will identify with a subculture that makes that media its core. "Overidentify" is a word Jones uses several times to describe the conditions that lead to a negative reaction to media.
This, I believe, is what the host on my local radio station was referring to: if we are to change the way young people react to media (or "harness the power of media," as Jones also says) we must begin by understanding why they like what they do and what sorts of interpretations they give it. This is why this book particularly excites me: not so much that it argues that violent media is "good" but that it opens the door to reducing its negative effects. I don't know that even the author intended this as his book's primary message (indeed, I think he often errs by downplaying the reality of violence in contemporary American society), but for those of us who are concerned the culture of violence, that may be its most important argument. I believe this may indeed be the "answer" to a circular argument that has seemed for decades to make no difference to the harsh reality of our society or the content of popular culture.
The book's tone is thorough, measured, and persuasive. My sense is that it will be of greatest interest to those who are already inclined to think about these issues, whether from a personal or philosophical point of view. I, who have no children but am very concerned about the quality of contemporary culture, found it compelling. As did a friend with two young boys. Another friend, however, found it "a bit slow." Interestingly, he confessed that he agreed with nearly all of the book's points, and said he didn't feel the need of so many thorough arguments and examples to support them. Gerard Jones has created something intriguing here: a book that may be more interesting to those inclined to disagree with his initial thesis than those who agree. That, perhaps, is the mark of a truly thoughtful and thought-provoking work.

My New Go-To Manual for all Things Social Entrepreneurship
By Nerdlicious
Okay, so I tend to be pretty picky about these kinds of books (nonfiction, business, how-to); there's just so much "noise" in this space that it can be difficult to find high quality material, but this book is officially my go-to reference for when people ask me questions about social entrepreneurship. The author outlines the various aspects of organizing a social enterprise (what it is, legal/incorporation issues, fundraising, measuring impact, intrapreneurship) as well as the more personal-oriented aspects of social entrepreneurship (taking the entrepreneurship leap, building a career in this space, consumer habits, etc.). It covers all the major areas and gives plenty of real-world examples.

It's also written from the perspective of three rising entrepreneurs, so it's a bit more interesting than just reading your usual dry, how-to manual––and it's well-organized, so if there are only a few topics that the reader is interested in, it's easy to skim through the table of contents and find the location in the book of those topics only. Lastly, the author also makes it relevant to all sorts of people (business owners/founders, students, professors, people interesting in creating social enterprises within existing organizations) and all sorts of business (nonprofit, for profit, small, large, etc.), which makes it relatable/accessible regardless of whether you're a die-hard social entrepreneur, just getting your feet wet in this work, or merely exploring.

Great Introduction to the Social Impact Scene
By mit
As the reader quickly finds out, social entrepreneurship is a vast topic. I really can appreciate how the author is able to keep it from being “drinking from a firehose” and presenting the material in a self-contained manageable volume. What makes this possible is a great format in following three very interesting characters looking to start a social enterprise. The book, which starts out as a story, extends beyond that by dropping in tons of knowledge with qualified sources, and ends up a very credible reference. You can tell a lot of research went into it especially in the areas of legal structure, fundraising, and the global scene for social impact. I think this is a great introduction and provides the framework for anyone wanting to enter the space.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the book as a curious reader who hopes one day to enter the social impact scene. Additionally, as a relatively newer topic in entrepreneurship, there doesn't seem to be much material available to help guide, making this book all the more necessary and valued. This would be a great addition to Business school curriculum.

Everything you need to know in a practical, easy-to-follow format
By Kay Kohl
This is a FANTASTIC guide to the world of social entrepreneurship. When I first read the example Parekh structures the book around (getting healthy, affordable food to low-income people living in "food deserts"), I thought: 'In the absence of a billionaire investor bankrolling the project, how would you even go about doing that?!' Now I know! She provides a step-by-step narrative--complete with trial and error--showing one real-world way that it could be done. That's my favorite thing about this book: It offers practical, down-to-earth advice you can really use. If you're thinking about social entrepreneurship, do yourself a favor and read this book and keep it as a reference. It's jam-packed with everything you need to know--and it's incredibly inspiring, as well!

Wonderful
By AnnainCA@aol.com
I have always enjoyed reading autobiographies of my favorite children's authors, and "Little by Little" was no exception. Jean Little is a very perceptive writer, right on target with children's emotions and has great insight on what it means to be an outcast or misfit. It was interesting reading about her early childhood in Asia (no wonder I keep getting her mixed up with Jean Fritz!), her eventual move back to Canada with her family, and her visual handicap. I also highly recommend "Stars Come Out Within," the sequel to this book which traces her adulthood and career as a writer and her eventual blindness.

Little by Little
By A Customer
I really enjoyed this book because it was obviously a stuggle for Jean Little, but she still kept on going. She had many goals in her life and most of them was to do something in order to be normal. I think the most important parts of the story is when she gets her different pieces of writing published and actually gets money for it. She has loved books ever since she grew up. I noticed that many books that she has written has connections with her life. Most of them have a disabled person as a character. I think she writes all her books by using her life as a base, but altering many things.

Little by Little: A Writers Education
By Kara Davis
Jean Little's book Little by Little was absolutly amazing! While autobiographies and biographies usually bore me this one was so great I had trouble putting it down. Jean is such a great role modle for those who are crippled or have critical conditions. Even though she was partially blind and cross-eyed she commited herself to working hard and fullfilling her dreams of becoming a writer and poet. I would suggest reading this 5 star book to anyone because Jean Little is an absoulutly amazing woman that influences me greatly in achieving what I want to achieve in my life!

Kids Pick Up On Everything: How Parental Stress Is Toxic To Kids, by David Code

Want healthy kids? Relax and socialize more!

Parents worry about BPA in plastics and chemicals in food, but when it comes to children's health, the real toxin is parental stress, because kids pick up on everything.

Research shows that children can "catch" their parents' stress just like they catch a virus, soaking up the stress that pervades a household until their developing nervous systems reach "overload." Then kids act-out, or get sick.

Award-winning author David Code explains the medical research showing how parental stress is a major risk factor in today's epidemic of child health problems, from allergies and obesity to ADHD, asthma, and sensory disorders. Parents need to know:

• Parental Stress Can Alter a Child's Genes
Scientists have discovered that our genes are not set in stone. There is a kind of "on-off switch" on genes, called the epigenome. Stress hormones can switch some "good" genes off, and some "bad" genes on.

• Parental Stress Affects Almost Every Child's Health
It's just a matter of degree. The higher the stress levels in the parents, the higher the risk that good genes will be switched off, and bad genes will be switched on during a child's development.

• It's Never Too Late
Yes, stressed parents create stressed children, but the damage can be reversed. Research suggests that, when parents relax more, children display fewer symptoms. As one Duke geneticist remarked, "I've got goose bumps right now talking about it. You're looking at the book of life, how it's read and how you can change it."

Author David Code gives readers a "doctor's note," offering parents permission to relax, have fun and socialize more, so that our children can grow up healthier and happier. Edited by Sharon Begley, the former science editor of Newsweek, Code's book explodes the myth that good parenting is about giving your child more attention.

Our healthy relationships are the best gift we can give our children, and this book shows you how.

He sets out to teach parents, in a compassionate and accessible way, how their stress may affect their children's health, without laying on blame or guilt. Code is correct
By Mary B. Serene
David Code is 'right on the money' with his analysis and conclusions about how to keep children emotionally, and hence physically, healthy. David correctly points out that stress carries over from parent to child. As physicians, we often see over-involved parents creating unhealthy parent-child dynamics. This book is a gift to couples by teaching them how to raise happier children and at the same time, increase their passion for each other.

Encouraging news for stressed parents!
By Jennifer DeVore
The effect of stressed parents on their children has been in the news lately so this book is a timely exploration of both the pre-natal and post-natal effects of parental stress upon children. Dave Code (an old college friend of mine), does a fantastic job of breaking down many, many complex studies done on the effects of stress. He then translates the (often distressing) results of these studies into clear action items for parents. I was fascinated by the book's description of how helicopter parenting is bad for kids' health. It's interesting how society has changed, because helicopter parenting simply wasn't possible in the past when 4+ kids were the norm and moms - who lacked modern "conveniences" like washing machines and grocery stores -- were much busier simply keeping their families alive and fed. For me, the book reinforced the importance of not only family time but the importance of reaching out to friends and neighbors and making time for more socializing -- and just plain fun -- in our communities. My favorite quote: "If I could wave my magic wand and reduce the stress of today's parents, I would give them a glass of wine, a friend, and an Italian village square to go socialize in every evening." Italian villages aren't in my immediate future but I will make an effort to sit outside with my neighbors and a glass of wine while we watch the kids play.

Stressed Out?
By Mycountryman
I'm sure everyone has heard the expression "stress kills", but what most of us fail to realize is the damaging effects our stress can have on a child's upbringing. David Code's book explains how a stress free house can exponentially help a child's development. As the father of four kids, I can't help but wonder why some children act one way while others act another. Kids Pick Up On Everything helped in answering this question.
