Human Poisoning from Native and Cultivated Plants, by James Walker Hardin

Human Poisoning from Native and Cultivated Plants has been written by two specialists- a botanist and a physician. Their book is written for the layman and includes both native and cultivated plants with their scientific and common names. The main portion of the book is arranged by plant families under which individual species and varieties are described and discussed. Notes are given on each plant's geographical range and the effects and symptoms of poisoning. There is a list of poisonous plant manuals arranged by states and sections devoted to allergies, dermatitis, internal poisoning, and poisoning of pets. For the physician, technical instructions on recommended treatment are added. This edition, the authors have added new material and many new illustrations, including a full color insert.

A USEFUL BOOK TO HAVE AROUND EVEN IF IT IS OLD
By D. Blankenship
If you spend very much time at all outdoors, have a garden, keep houseplants, walk in the woods or park or even go on an occasional outing with friends to the local garden or flower shop, then you really need this book or one like it.

It is absolutely fascinating as to the number of plants, both wild and domesticated, that can harm you. This small book, while scholarly in nature, is quite readable and oh so informative. The author has addressed all of the major and most of the minor plants which are harmful to humans. These range from the mundane like poison ivy to the exotic. It will truly surprise you that in many cases the pretty flower setting on our windowsill can quite well kill you if eaten. Now most adults do not go around nibbling on their houseplants, but do remember that many households have children who, if you have not noticed, will eat just about anything at any time. There are dangers out there and we all need to be aware of them.

The book is broken down into various sections which include Allergies, Dermatitis, Internal poisoning, Poisoning of Pets and a very workable glossary and bibliography. The book also includes a very comprehensive index to scientific and common names which is quite useful if the reader desires to do further research.

There are 55 illustrations, most of which are black and white photographs. Each plant addressed is well described along with its dangers; which part of the pant is harmful, what the treatment for it is, where it is found and how to avoid it.

I have had this work around for quite a number of years and do have others covering the same subject, but I find myself continually returning to this one...sort of the "Mother Ship" of my poison book collection.

It is of interest to me that I have been able to identify 19 poison plants on my property over the years...all wild and native. Actually the total is 20 plants if you count the Marijuana I find planted along the banks of the stream behind our house each year. For over twenty years now this guy (I know who he is and will call him "George,") plants from four to five small plots along the stream bed. Each year without fail we will have at least one flash flood and his entire crop is washed on down into the nearest lake. Each year he tries again. When we hear the water rushing from our back porch, I always tell my wife, "well, there goes George's crop again." I always am able to find his plots but do nothing as I actually receive a certain amount of entertainment over the situation. George comes from a well know family in our area which are not, I am sorry to say, known for their mental capacity. On the other hand, the entire community admires their tenacity. George is living proof that the apple does not fall far from the tree. His father before him spent years trying to grow banana trees in his back yard...which is not a top crop here in Missouri.

Anyway, this is an older book but well worth owning if you can find a copy. Also, keep in mind that one of the movie channels will be starting a new series next year...The Borgias, and it might be nice to brush-up on this subject, i.e. poison plants.
