Absolutely loved this! A fun new twisted take on the Jack the Ripper case involving one of the original detectives, Frederick Abberline. A good portion of the story retells the actual Ripper story factually with some artistic license to fit the author's continued gothic tale of murder involving a secret science society dabbling in medical hypnosis to cure hysteria and other mental diagnoses with much more murderous and psychotic symptoms. After the action in Whitechapel, the truly fictional part moves on to Paris, France and even has a brief interlude in America. Real characters from the historic case have a part in this crime story making a fun historical crime thriller, such as Dr. William Gull, Police Commissioner Charles Warren, John Pizer and James Maybrick. This is not a serious treatise on the Ripper case but a very fun fictional whodunnit which I enjoyed very much. The art didn't quite wow me but was ok and certainly atmospheric.

Adds a new element to the Jack the Ripper story.
By stickerooni
"The neighborhood was a maze. And now it had its minotaur..." This line, from relatively early in the book, had me hooked to this story, and the artwork by Jean-Charles Poupard is beautiful.

The title says it all. This is a Jack the Ripper story, but the twist to it is the connection author Franois Debois makes with murders in France about the same time. In fact, other than the obligatory naming of some of the Ripper's victims, and a description of what he did to the bodies, very little takes place with the Ripper. Well...maybe I should put it that very little takes place with the regularly attributed Ripper killings.

The story interested me very early on, but the middle third of the book really seemed to drag and I caught myself simply looking at the pictures and only half-heartedly reading the book. The last third of the book did pick up, but there was a great deal of information about some characters that I didn't understand.

But what does keep us reading this is the art by Jean-Charles Poupard. Poupard manages to capture the seedy underbelly of London (and Paris) just prior to the turn of the century, with all its darkness, and yet keep the art bright and lively enough that we aren't struggling to make out what's happening. It has been awhile since I have seen graphic novel art that is so slick. I would have been very happy to have kept turning these pages to keep looking at this art.

I really liked this book, but I do think the story could have been a bit stronger (or more consistent) all the way through.

Looking for a good book? The French graphic novel, Jack the Ripper, by Franois Debois and Jean-Charles Poupard adds a new element to the Ripper legend by tying in some murders in Paris, but the story struggles mid-way through and picks up again to finish off the book.

I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher, through Edelweiss, in exchange for an honest review.

Interesting Storyline Beautiful Artwork
By Maxine McLister
It’s the spring of 1889 and it has been months since the last Ripper kill in Whitechapel. The case has gone cold and Scotland Yard has moved on to other cases. However, Inspector Frederick Abberline just can’t let it go. When a string of eerily similar murders begin to terrorize Paris, he heads there to continue his investigation. But what he discovers is even worse than he could ever have imagined and soon not only his life but his sanity are in jeopardy.

The graphic novel Jack the Ripper, written by Francois Debois and illustrated by Jean-Charles Poupard, was originally released in 2012 by Editions Soleil in France and is now being reissued by Dark Horse in English for the first time. The story is well-crafted and gives an interesting take on the Ripper murders while the artwork is, in a word, beautiful. Overall, a very nice edition to the Ripper lore.
