I love this book!

Who knows how many books come out every year on the Tarot. The vast majority of them seem to be the same book paraphrased over and over again-penned perhaps by robots sitting in La Maison Dieu. There are exceptions, of course. Alejandro Jodorowsky's book being one that comes to mind.

None but this one, as far as I know, propose such exquisite and impossible ideas as this: "Our aim is not to arrive at an ultimate truth, but to stop, albeit briefly, at an exception made true." or "Instead of using a sequence of cards to arrive at some form of meaning, meaning-making will be the means through which we arrive at a sequence of cards, in a process that would have the Marseille Tarot shuffling itself."

For those of us nourished by the milk of dada, surrealism, and all that followed, and all that came before .. for those of us who incline towards the artist's, or the poet's sensibility, this book is a delight. It is not, as another reviewer has said, a crib or an introduction to the Tarot. But it would be a great second book to read on the Tarot, wherever you may have begun.

At all costs, do not buy this book if you are looking for a clear and concise guide to reading Tarot cards. Instead, what Enrique proposes is a radical perspective which brings the images to vibrant life through analogical thinking and poetic metaphor. In true dervish style, Enriquez challenges us into terrains uncharted by almost any other Tarot theorist out there--to a place where profound understanding precedes intellectual rationale and genuine art is made in the moment. Get off my lawn

I've just spent the day with Practical CSS3: Develop and Design, by the amazingly Wookiee-like Chris Mills. Aside from having my name in it, this is a pretty essential book. Aimed at developers that aren't stupid but don't know much CSS, this book will allow you to hit the ground running and annoy your fellow front-end developers as you stomp all over their turf - just make sure it's not MY turf. I prefer to do fairly in-depth reviews, so here we go.

CHAPTER 1: Introduction to CSS3 and Modern Web Design

Back in the day, this web design lark was rather convoluted. If you wanted rounded corners, you used images. Chris reminds you of many of these old-fashioned traits in this introduction chapter, and then slowly introduces you to these new-fangled "spangly web innovations" that make everything so much easier. You get a nice little round-up of all the CSS3 Modules, a quick run through of things like vendor prefixes, pseudo classes, and a handy CSS Selectors Reference.

CHAPTER 2: Building a Solid Cross-Browser Template With HTML5 and JavaScript

If you use Dreamweaver or some other fancy IDE all day, you might not spend much time writing the basics; instead, clicking things that generate your code for you. In his second chapter, Chris walks you through a basic HTML5 template from the ground up. I'm a huge believer in hand-coding markup, so I think everyone should know how to do this without relying on tools. Once you know the how and why, then it's okay to use things like Dreamweaver. Also covered here and the newer elements, coding styles, and even JS libraries to plug the gaps for the older browsers (commonly known as polyfills).

CHAPTER 3: Spicing up your Fonts and Text

One of the great things about Chris is that he's A TRUE GOD OF METAL, and you can see the metal shine through in this chapter about web fonts. I don't recall the last time I saw so many medieval fonts in one book. Amazing. You're also going to learn some serious font knowledge and how to use them properly on your sites. Farewell, regular font stack.

CHAPTER 4: Enhancing Boxes with CSS3 Bling

BRING ON THE BLING! This is the stuff that most people seem to want to know about: rounded corners, box shadows, gradients... oh my! But as Chris knows you're in the real world where people still use older browsers (i.e. IE), he introduces you to things like CSS3PIE to give those older version of IE some bling, too. The chapter finishes by showing you how to build a banner ad for a heavy metal band called DEAD HAMSTER. I mean, come on, how many books can you name that include ace things like that!?

CHAPTER 5: Animated Effects Using CSS3

In this post-iOS world, where Flash is a dirty word (thankfully!), CSS has upped its game and started moving things around a bit. In this chapter, Chris covers CSS Transforms, (2D and 3D) Transitions, and Animations. Just don't use them all at once, please? There is a lot to get through with these examples, but with a dash of Monty Python, Chris makes things very easy to understand. Treat this chapter as a reference to which you return often, rather than something to read twice and expect it all to stick.

CHAPTER 6: Using CSS to Implement Icons

Icons are EVERYWHERE these days (especially at github.com, where they went a bit overboard). The Big Fella talks you through several methods of applying these little fellas in this chapter: from individual images, to sprites, and through to icon fonts.

CHAPTER 7: CSS3 Layout Chops

This chapter is a bit more cutting edge and covers Multi-Column Layouts, Flexbox, Grids, Regions, and Exclusions. You get to meet Bruce the Dungbeetle, too. I'd stayed away from even reading about Flexbox until this book, as it seemed to be all over the place. In fact, Chris mentions it changed dramatically as he was writing the book. Hopefully, it's stabilised now. Chris walks you through Multi-Column Layouts, Flexbox, and Grids with some really easy to understand examples. I'd not heard about Regions and Exclusions before this book, but I wish they both worked TODAY. I think it's madness that we're only just getting these things in 2012. All we need now is browser support! Anyway, what an ace chapter. I got loads out of this one.

CHAPTER 8: Responsive and Adaptive Design

Aside from all the Bling of gradients and rounded corners, the next thing that gets most people excited at the moment is responsive design, which Chris covers here in a nice retro fashion. I've been doing the whole responsive thing for a while now, and yet I still managed to come away with a fair bit of new knowledge from this chapter. Great to see DEAD HAMSTER back from the grave, too.

CHAPTER 9: Styling HTML5 Media and Forms (Bonus downloadable PDF)

Another casualty of the post-iOS world: using Flash for online video delivery. This can get quite involved, depending on the level of codec support and file sizes you want to offer. Chris talks you through using the and elements, and how to harness the controls with JavaScript. Finally, he talks you through some of the lesser-mentioned pseudo-classes, such as :required and :optional, :valid and :invalid, and :in-range and :out-of-range

Aces High! Get this printed out and stuck on the wall next to your nerd station, stat!

CONCLUSION:
If you're a back-end developer that wants to know a whole lot more about CSS, then buy this book. If you're a front-end developer that fancies polishing up your skills and learning a few things you didn't already know, then buy this book. And buy some heavy metal albums to listen to while you're reading it. I can recommend the mighty Conquest of Steel.

Great read and with truly practical examples

This is a great book packed full of easy to work through, real world examples (even if they are a little garish!) for many aspects CSS3.

It's good that the author has combined the often much hyped parts of CSS3 (shadows, round corners gradients, etc) into a single chapter and by doing so created space in the book for other chapters that go into more depth.

Two chapters stood out for me, the one on fonts and the one on icons. Chris gives practical use cases for all of these ideas and it's really good to see all the options we have for embedding icons in one place rather than being scattered over a number of articles across the web.

The book is a good length, without many dependancies so you don't need to read it cover to cover and can jump in and out if you need to. I'd recommend this book to anyone wishing to learn more about CSS3.

Reasonable book on CSS3 but not for everyone.

Overall this is a reasonably good book on CSS3. Positive points are that Chris writes clearly and explains things well. I thought he made good choices about what to include in the book. Some of the other review give more detail about the good points so I will discuss some of what I perceived as shortcomings.

Firstly I didn't think it was really hands on enough. I would've preferred to see a more tutorial approach. Often I find that just reading a book puts me to sleep, I really need lots of stuff to engage me.

Secondly one thing I like to do with books on HTML5, CSS, javascript etc is steal their designs ! However with Chris's book I wasn't that impressed with the end result. The end result just didn't look that slick and professional.

Thirdly he adopts a chatty writing style and makes a quite a few jokes. The problem with jokes like this are not everyone shares the sense of humour, and also when you reread something at a later date the humour starts to become annoying. With regards to humour it seems that a lot of programmers including Chris like Monty Python. Maybe if you are like me and are extremely irritated by Monty Python, avoid this book !!! ha ha.

A couple of other points to note. This book assumes you have experience with HTML and CSS. If you lack either of these consider a different book or do some online tutorials first. If you are new to CSS, a book which starts from the basics is CSS3: The missing manual. This remains in my opinion the best introduction to CSS.

The last thing which annoyed me is that I went to the website and tried to find the official download materials, but couldn't locate them!! Maybe they are there and I couldn't see them, but I wish they made the link a bit clearer. Perhaps use some CSS3 to highlight it ! LOL. If anyone knows where they are let me know !!! Thanks.

And yet another introduction to some of the basic services offered by AWS

After almost 10 years since the EC2 service was first launched, Amazon still securely controls the IaaS market, despite the number of contenders significantly increased since. This dominance resulted in legions of start-up entering the PaaS market, building their services on top of AWS, as well as in an abundance of blogs and books dedicated to it. Part of this literature covers a specific service and thus targets a small niche; other parts give instead an overview of the services or a good part of them. Learning AWS belongs in the latter category: it targets DevOps and Cloud Architects with little or no experience with the AWS and aims to teach them about the basic features of the key services, so that they can easily get started. Yea, yet another introduction to some of the services of the Amazon Web Services.

Writing a book that introduces the reader to the whole Amazon ecosystem is hard. Not because the services are hard to understand and/or their features keps secret. On the contrary, the difficulty comes from the fact that, on the one hand Amazon provides an excellent and very detailed documentation, which they often update; on the other hand, the internet and the bookstores are invaded by a horde of articles and books, respectively, that do the same. So, while the task per se is easy, it is instead very hard to provide the reader with value that make the purchase worth it.

The very first thing that grasps the attention of the enthusiast reading the book is the presence of two kinds of images: some are very detailed and colorful, while others are very spartan and all in black and white. The former are screenshots taken from Amazon (not sure if from an ad hoc session or from the official documentation itself), while the latter are made by the author. This discrepancy definitely lowers the overall quality of the text. Plus, let’s be honest: black and white is good for Casablanca. In 2015 I do expect high quality colorful images and schemas. Mainly from a book that goes for 49.99.

Up to chapter 3, the reader is slowly taken through the steps required to launch both an EC2 and an RDS instances, and a security group. Slowly here means that the reader, who is supposed to be a DevOps or a Cloud Architect, is presented with 3 pages plenty of images to teach him how to register to the AWS services, just like filling a form was that hard. The book is agreeable and friendly to read, no doubts. Still, we are told what we have been told over and over in these long 9 years: don’t store sessions on the EC2 instances; create stateless applications so that they scale out; avoid single point of failures. Any Cloud Architect should know this already, despite being completely new to the Amazon Web Services.

Starting with chapter 4 the discussion moves to scalability. Again, lots of nice screenshots and black and white schemas that get DevOps, with an (over) friendly step-by-step approach, through setting up other basic services, such as ELB. This goes on until the very back cover. Another disturbing things that repeats through the book is that each and every option of every service introduced by the author is listed. Mind it, listed, not explained. Just like a reference.

Wrapping it all up, this book is not worth the purchase. It does not provide anything that Amazon does not freely give to any beginner already, including the reference to each and every option of their services. Official documentation apart, the bookstores are plenty of better and more affordable alternatives.

For expert users who are however new to cloud services

This book covers a lot of topics related to Amazon Web Services (AWS) - the leading cloud services: setting up an own AWS account, a high-level overview of the main AWS components, criteria for designing cloud applications, AWS cost model, application development environment, solutions for scalability, high availability, fault tolerance, disaster recovery, security, and deployment to live production. Due to so many topics and practical recommendations, this book could serve as a quick guide for expert users who are however new to cloud-based services. Despite the fact that many topics are not described in depth, it is still useful to have all of them under the same cover.

I'll preface this review by stating that I have used AWS in the distant past, but I needed to find a resource to get me up to speed on all of the new service offerings. This book did just that. The overview of the service offerings in the early chapters were clear and concise. In my opinion, the chapters on optimization and security will be a great resource for any AWS user. I like the step-by-step setup instructions for the different services. They were clearly written and easy to follow. Learning AWS will definitely become one of my go to resources.

Great book for Amharic beginners

What I really liked about this book is its approach to teaching Amharic. A few other books that I have looked at contain nothing more than a list of Amharic sentences and their translations. Supposedly, one is supposed to memorize these sentences and repeat them like a parrot without any contextual understanding or nuance - nor any real appreciation for their grammatical construction. This book is different. It does give you the most common forms of interactions (greetings, etc.), but it provides them with context!

This book is structured as a teaching manual - complete with exercises. I found it very easy to follow the material. I highly recommend it to anyone who is serious about their Amharic. I can see how this can be invaluable to parents who have adopted Ethiopian kids or to Ethiopian parents who want their kids to learn their native tongue. The book goes through the forms of speech, the Ethiopian alphabet, the phonetic pronunciations, and even the Ethiopian calendar and numbering system. At the end of each topic, you will find exercises that challenge you and help reinforce the material.

If you are visiting Ethiopia and want to sample the REAL experience, you will do yourself a favor if you take this book with you.

Good manual, but has some shortfalls

I am currently working through this manual. It's a bit of a mixed bag for me and I've struggled with what rating to give it. 4 stars seems high to me but 3 stars seems a little low. Ultimately I decided to give it 4, only because knowing what I know, I'd still buy it again. If I could, I'd give it 3.5 stars. No offense to the current reviews but they do seem a little advertisement-y so I wanted to leave a real objective review.

There are some very nice and helpful things included; the cultural considerations are a very nice touch and I do appreciate the deeper dive into things like verb conjugations, etc. that you just cannot easily find online. For that, I love it and I'm continuing to work through it every night on my quest to learn Amharic. There is plenty of material to keep me busy for a long time.

That being said, there are some frustrating things here as well. The introduction in the book says "good for classroom use and self-study." I would tend to disagree with that statement. This would be a great manual for an Amharic-speaking instructor led classroom/session, but it can be frustrating sometimes as an English-speaking person desiring to learn Amharic on my own. A few examples:

* There is no standard way of displaying conversations, etc. in the manual. In many cases it will show the Amharic fidel to the phonetic soundings with no English translation. In other cases, it'll show just the Amharic fidel to English or only the phonetic Amharic to English. In reading through these, I'm left scratching my head in most cases. Fortunately these resources are available elsewhere online. For example, starting on page 27 in the dialogues, the first in class dialogue "In Class" is in English, with Amharic fidel but no phonetic translation. The second dialogue "Formal Greetings" Is in Amharic fidel, with the translation to Amharic phonetic. The English translation exists, but it isn't in line with the Amharic and is in a separate section altogether further on page 29. The next dialogue "informal greetings" has Amharic fidel with a translation to Amharic phonetic but no English translations at all. All of this really left me scratching my head and sent me online to get better information on greetings.

* Translations aren't always present. For example, on page 42 it discusses food items and says the following cultural food items to memorize. They are, however, only noted in Amharic with no English translations whatsoever. Without going online to look up what they all mean, how am I supposed to know what I'm memorizing?

* I have found at least one translation mistake (at least I think I have.) On page 44, in descriptive adjectives, it correctly lists "handsome" as k'onjo but the amharic fidel listed reads differently...መልከኛ ('malka�') instead of ቆንጆ (k'onjo.) I don't know the meaning of መልከኛ and it may be another way to say handsome, but it definitely doesn't read k'onjo.

* This is probably a little nitpicky and isn't a big deal, but I'd expect a language learning manual to be free of grammatical and spelling errors. I've found quite a few reading through it.

These things aside, I am still continuing to go through the book and thus don't really feel right about giving it 3 stars. I would definitely recommend it if you have the coaching of a native Amharic speaker, and it can still work if you are dedicated enough in self-study. Just be prepared for a few head scratching moments.

Gives cultural context to a difficult language

The professor put together a good book. I have the Lonely Planet Phrasebook, which is great, but I needed something to give me some deeper cultural context for the language. For example, the phrasebook will give you the Amharic Fidel (syllabic alphabet), but it won't give you the names of the different characters. The phrasebook will show you the basic form for an Ethiopic 'y', but it won't tell you that the character is called 'yaman', which is important because 'yaman' means 'right fist of power' and is the reason the character looks the way that it does. This coupled with exercises that will challenge your knowledge of the language and will DEMAND that you learn to write it as well, make this book ESSENTIAL to a better understanding of not just the Ethiopian language, but the culture and heritage behind it as well. It is well-worth the $20. Buy the book!!!

About the Author
Lisa A. Pruitt is the Lawrence Talbot Chair of Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley and also serves as an adjunct professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco. She recently served as the Associate Dean of Lifelong Learning and Outreach Education in the College of Engineering and has received numerous awards including the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring (2004) and the Graduate Student Instructor Mentor Award from the University of California, Berkeley (2009).

Ayyana M. Chakravartula received her Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley in 2005. She currently works at Exponent, Inc. in Menlo Park, CA, in its Mechanics and Materials practice. She has worked as a research scientist at the Cambridge Polymer Group in Boston, MA, and has served as an adjunct lecturer at Boston University. She has mentored numerous students, interns and research assistants in her graduate and postgraduate career.

Comprehensive text for upper level undergraduates

The text covers all of the areas of implantable materials for biomedical applications. A focus on fundamental engineering principles guides the text. Students will find the treatment of contemporary issues to be refreshing.

Really well thought out book for Material Engineering

Book discusses materials for placement into the Human body and why some work well and others not. Does lay down the foundation for tensile strength and stress fractures etc. Easily understood but the calculus is not well described and each diagram is highlighted in a faint black ink which was a poor choice.

Know what you are doing, this is a reference NOT a good textbook.

This is not a book for anyone without a thorough background in mechanical engineering. And there are multiple formulas that are incorrect and the "examples" are only partial and incomplete. It will require supplementing with a standard material mechanics book.
