A breath of fresh air for some old friends
By J.Prather
Nursery Rhyme Comics is a surprisingly comprehensive collection of most of the great rhymes I loved as a child, plus a couple I had never heard of. Each rhyme is given fresh treatment by one of fifty well known artists. They range from from the incredible cuteness of the donkey lifting his horn "To wake the world this sleepy morn" so expertly portrayed by Patrick McDonnell, to Lucy Knisley's decidedly different visual take on There Was and Old Woman Who Lived in A Shoe. The old woman in this version is Ruth of Ruth's Rock n Roll Babysitting Service. Ruth is an old woman wearing a skull t-shirt and sporting tattoos on both arms. Her rock band is the whips, and the kids sleep off an afternoon of rock and roll till their parents come and pick them up.

Quite a few of the comics are faithful interpretations of each rhyme, such as The Itsy Bitsy Spider. There's a spider, there's a spout and he gets all washed out, the only addition is that he's carrying luggage. Cute stuff! Jack Be Nimble is mad because he jumped over a candlestick - the last frame shows a decidedly red bottom! Solomon Grundy is a bit creepy, and Croak said the Toad is just beautifully illustrated by Laura Park. I especially liked One Two Buckle My Shoe by Dave Roman. It's count the clones time! I have far too many favorites to describe them all, but whether they are straightforward interpretations, or if the artist has placed a new spin on the old rhyme, these are all wonderful ways to introduce a child who may be somewhat older to some classic rhymes they might have missed out on during their toddler days.

This is a great book for any child's personal collection and will perhaps be best suited for households with a wide range of ages. Some of these will charm the smallest child and others will need an older eye to fully appreciate the sly humor. Adults will get a kick out of this one as well, making it a book sure to be enjoyed by the entire family. Out of all fifty rhymes, I could only count one or two that missed the mark, leaving this to be an excellent volume just teeming with creative, fun artistry. It's nice to see the classics get a breath of fresh air and a new look. Recommended.

I don't have young children anymore, but I do teach Gifted and Talented students from 1st through 5th grade. I ordered this book, because we study innovations in 5th grade, so I though this book would fit right in. The combination of popular Nursery Rhymes with comic book style illustrations was a hit with my students. They now understand what the term "innovation" means, as well as what a "parody" is. My students were reciting the classic nursery rhymes as I read the book out-loud and laughing at the whimsical illustrations. Some of their favorites were "Three Little Kittens," "Rock-a-bye Baby," "Pop Goes the Weasel," and "Humpty Dumpty," but they laughed especially hard when we read "Jack be Nimble." My next activity will be to have the students create their own innovations on a popular fairy tale of their choice. I can't wait to see what my highly creative students come up with.

For the Spongebob generation
By E. R. Bird
Nursery rhymes. What's up with that? (I feel like a stand up comedian when I put it that way). They're ubiquitous but nonsensical. Culturally relevant but often of unknown origins. Children's literary scholar Leonard Marcus ponders the amazing shelf life of nursery rhymes himself and comes up with some answers. Why is it that they last as long as they do in the public consciousness? Marcus speculates that "the old-chestnut rhymes that beguile in part by sounding so emphatically clear about themselves while in fact leaving almost everything to our imagination" leave themselves open to interpretation. And who better to do a little interpreting than cartoonists? Including as many variegated styles as could be conceivably collected in a single 128-page book, editor Chris Duffy plucks from the cream of the children's graphic novel crop (and beyond!) to create a collection so packed with detail and delight that you'll find yourself flipping to the beginning to read it all over again after you're done. Mind you, I wouldn't go handing this to a three-year-old any time soon, but for a certain kind of child, this crazy little concoction is going to just the right bit of weirdness they require.

Fifty artists are handed a nursery rhyme apiece. The goal? Illustrate said poem. Give it a bit of flair. Put in a plot if you have to. So it is that a breed of all new comics, those of the nursery ilk, fill this book. Here at last you can see David Macaulay bring his architectural genius to "London Bridge is Falling Down" or Roz Chast give "There Was a Crooked Man" a positive spin. Leonard Marcus offers an introduction giving credence to this all new coming together of text and image while in the back of the book editor Chris Duffy discusses the rhymes' history and meaning. And as he says in the end, "We're just letting history take its course."

In the interest of public scrutiny, the complete list of artists on this book consists of Nick Abadzis, Andrew Arnold, Kate Beaton, Vera Brosgol, Nick Bruel, Scott Campbell, Lilli Carre, Roz Chast, JP Coovert, Jordan Crane, Rebecca Dart, Eleanor Davis, Vanessa Davis, Theo Ellsworth, Matt Forsythe, Jules Feiffer, Bob Flynn, Alexis Frederick-Frost, Ben Hatke, Gilbert Hernandez, Jaime Hernandez, Lucy Knisley, David Macaulay, Mark Martin, Patrick McDonnell, Mike Mignola, Tony Millionaire, Tao Nyeu, George O'Connor, Mo Oh, Eric Orchard, Laura Park, Cyril Pedrosa, Lark Pien, Aaron Renier, Dave Roman, Marc Rosenthal, Stan Sakai, Richard Sala, Mark Siegel, James Sturm, Raina Telgemeier, Craig Thompson, Richard Thompson, Sara Varon, Jen Wang, Drew Weing, Gahan Wilson, Gene Luen Yang, and Stephanie Yue (whew!). And as with any collection, some of the inclusions are going to be stronger than others. Generally speaking if fifty people do something, some of them are going to have a better grasp on the process than others. That said, only a few of these versions didn't do it for me. At worst the versions were mediocre. At best they went in a new direction with their material without getting too crazy. Nick Bruel, for example, does a great "Three Little Kittens", filling it with pie-obsessed felines, while Craig Thompson gives his "The Owl and the Pussycat" a kind of John Steed/Emma Peel flair.

The artist couldn't necessarily agree on who the intended audience was either. Amazon, interestingly enough, lists this book as intended for "Baby-Preschool" readers. Um . . . yeah, probably not so much. Though some of these rhymes would be just fine for that age range if you read them aloud, but others just aren't going to go over with the ankle biter set. Of course, there's not a lot of consistency from one rhyme to another. You might read Lucy Knisley's "There Was an Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe" where Knisley has justified the line "Then whipped them all soundly" by making the kids play the instruments of the Old Lady's now defunct band "The Whips" (it's a bit of a stretch, I know) then follow that up with the Eleanor Davis poem "The Queen of Hearts" which takes the line "And beat the knave full sore" and pretty much does just that. Or you might see Raina Telegemeier's highly innocent "Georgie Porgie" followed up with Mike Mignola (the creator of Hellboy) and his dark mannequin-laden contemplation of mortality in "Solomon Grundy". The tone shifts about a bit. That's not a problem for a nine or ten-year-old capable of enjoying the dichotomies but for a kid learning them for the first time it's going to be just too much.

The choice of artists to include must have been fun. Some of these illustrators aren't your standard go-to comic book creators for kids either. For example, Tony Millionaire has spent the better part of his professional life inspiring my nightmares with his alternative strip MAAKIES while I associate Gahan Wilson best with his New Yorker comics more than anything else. Other artists are part of the First Second family, like Gene Yang or Sara Varon. And then there are folks that editor Chris Duffy must have taken a chance on. Kate Beaton, creator of the hilarious and brilliant online strip Hark! A Vagrant shines here with her "Duke of York". Meanwhile Cul de Sac creator Richard Thompson gets to shine with his own "There Was an Old Woman Tossed Up in a Basket". Finally, there are the picture book illustrators like Tao Nyeu or Marc Rosenthal who fit in so well you'd never imagine comics weren't their first love. Personally, I hope that maybe a graphic novel is in their own futures someday.

The advantage of having such a deep well of artists to pull from is that you can usually find folks to fit your own tastes. Personally I felt that Cyril Pedrosa's "This Little Piggy" and "The Lion and the Unicorn" by Aaron Renier were worthy of their own, albeit very short, books. And then there are the visual styles one prefers. I liked it the most when artists referenced some of the great illustrators of the past. Theo Ellsworth's "As I Was Going to St. Ives", for example, seems clearly influenced by Wanda Gag's Millions of Cats, for example. And I can attest that it is a sheer delight to read a book of this sort in full color. From Cyril Pedrosa's hot pink borders to Dave Roman's penchant for purple, this book just wouldn't be the same if the publisher hadn't splurged on a couple shades and tones here and there.

Of course the danger of a book like this is that the reader gets greedy. A mere fifty artists? Couldn't they get Harry Bliss, Jeff Smith, Art Spiegelman, Barry Deutsch, Hope Larson, yadda yadda yadda? Give people something awesome and they'll always find a way to kvetch and demand more. Nursery Rhyme Comics deserves better than that, and will hopefully find its way onto many a child's shelf. And it pairs rather splendidly with a similar collection of American Indian folktales illustrated by a range of graphic novelists called Trickster. If, however, you'd like to pair this book with its literary opposite (authors paired with a single piece of art rather than artists paired with a single short text) consider placing it alongside the fabulous The Chronicles of Harris Burdick with art by Chris Van Allsburg. There are as many way to pair and display and talk up this book as there are artists inside of it. Likewise, there are as many ways to read and enjoy this book as there are children out there who would get a kick out of its pages. Whether they're reading familiar rhymes or discovering new ones, Nursery Rhyme Comics gives kids everywhere a new way of encountering some essential cultural touchstones. Great good stuff.

For ages 9-12.

Very erotic, but like my ladies on top in the end
By Amazon Customer
A great story with many hardcore submissive scenes that can keep me up, it just I like my ladies to have it rough but come out on top in the end. I just like submissive to be parts of it, not a conclusion.

Predictable and one-dimensional!!!
By Gilbert C. Gordon
Every "book" is the same! Heroines go out to fight the bad guys, get distracted, get captured, go on to become strippers, prostitutes, sperm covered sluts, and slaves to sexual deviants that seem to populate Mr. Ship's world!

Fortunately all of these deviants live in the same neighborhood, for the most part!

I've come to the conclusion that Mr. Ship, either hates strong women or he's really into BDSM and humiliation!

All of his "books" are predictable and the only difference is the cast of criminals that end up on the pages!

there is much better reading

super hero porn. Some like this comic book super hero style porn, I found it to get boring, repetitive and often offensive. Super villains raping female super heroes and the female super heroes like it was too much and legitimizes rape.

Autonomous Nature: Problems of Prediction and Control From Ancient Times to the Scientific Revolution, by Carolyn Merchant

Autonomous Nature investigates the history of nature as an active, often unruly force in tension with nature as a rational, logical order from ancient times to the Scientific Revolution of the seventeenth century. Along with subsequent advances in mechanics, hydrodynamics, thermodynamics, and electromagnetism, nature came to be perceived as an orderly, rational, physical world that could be engineered, controlled, and managed. Autonomous Nature focuses on the history of unpredictability, why it was a problem for the ancient world through the Scientific Revolution, and why it is a problem for today. The work is set in the context of vignettes about unpredictable events such as the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius, the Bubonic Plague, the Lisbon Earthquake, and efforts to understand and predict the weather and natural disasters. This book is an ideal text for courses on the environment, environmental history, history of science, or the philosophy of science.

Introduction to Probability and Statistics: Principles and Applications for Engineering and the Computing Sciences, by J. Susan Milton, Je

This well-respected text is designed for the first course in probability and statistics taken by students majoring in Engineering and the Computing Sciences. The prerequisite is one year of calculus. The text offers a balanced presentation of applications and theory. The authors take care to develop the theoretical foundations for the statistical methods presented at a level that is accessible to students with only a calculus background. They explore the practical implications of the formal results to problem-solving so students gain an understanding of the logic behind the techniques as well as practice in using them. The examples, exercises, and applications were chosen specifically for students in engineering and computer science and include opportunities for real data analysis.

a standard statistics book for engineers
By Stanislav Kolenikov
I taught a class at upper undergraduate level (mostly junior students) for a non-majors (mostly engineering students, some economics and political science) at a research university using this book.

It was written in the mid 1980s, and has not seen major updates even though it now comes in 4th edition. One of the assignments I gave was to comment whether you recognize the brand names of the mainframe computers mentioned in the problem. Newer stuff like say the bootstrap or machine learning or anything like that is not mentioned anywhere nearly. True, it has all the major results and techniques, but it was written by statisticians as the first course in statistics for to-be-statisticians, rather than the-only-course-in-statistics-you'll-ever-see for engineers. Thus a lot of things could have been presented in a different way with a different depth of exposure. Say the reliability, arguably a more important topic for engineers than moment generating function techniques, deserves a whole separate chapter, rather than being stuck in a middle of the chapter on continuous distributions. Simulations could have been highlighted throughout the book -- a good fraction of my students would probably be geekier than me with computers. I would unite all the confidence intervals under the umbrella of a single chapter, rather than presenting the CI for mean in one chapter and CI for variance in the next one. And so on. There even were errors in the answers in the end of the book, although you would probably expect the fourth edition not to have any.

Students complained a lot about the book in my class, too. Some said it did not help much, although there were others who did not come much to class (admittedly, I am a pretty boring lecturer) and got B's and A's, so apparently it was of some use to them. The price is of course also an issue: I personally won't pay $120 for book of this quality to sit in my professional library, and it sucks that I have my students buy it.

[Wasserman's [ASIN:0387402721 All of Statistics: A Concise Course in Statistical Inference (Springer Texts in Statistics)]] is a much more modern book, although in all likelihood it would be difficult for my clientelle. My other favorite is Utts' Seeing Through Statistics (with CD-ROM and InfoTrac ), but this one is on the other side of technicality, being too easy. Finally, for engineering students specifically, Ryan's Modern Engineering Statistics (Hardcover) appears to be a much better text, although I have not taught from it, and my recommendation is based on just browsing through the pages and supplementing the current book with examples and problems from Ryan's book.

More garbage by professional academics
By thatstheticket
This book is used in introductory probability and statistics courses, yet it reads like the authors' awkwardly written cliff notes.

The authors insist on using multiple levels of mathematical indirection to introduce even the most basic of theorems. Examples in the reading consist mostly of long drawn out, and totally unreferenceable word problems. There are no diagrams to help visualize concepts until chapter four. Summaries are wordy. Summaries of similar topics are inconsistently worded leading to a lack of parallelism, and gratuitously increasing the difficulty of comparing them.

Overall, this is a useless book to learn or study from.

Wordy, bland, and needlessly complex
By Aerospace Engineer
This is the third course in probability I have taken over the last 30 years and have not found a good textbook yet. The book is pure drudgery to read. Overly wordy, complex explanations are the norm. Or as the authors probably would have put it: The text makes use of a multiplicity of non value added ink-on-paper replications of verbal communication to excessively inhibit the coherent transmission of information vis-a-vis the learning construct. Presentation of the math concepts is inconsistent, partly set aside in call outs and partly buried beneath tons of words in the text, and partly assumed from the ether. Problem is, you don't know which.

I really would like to know why statisticians feel the need to obscure what is really fairly simple math within a world of illogical terminology and backwards thinking. That is, the actual math is fairly simple assuming you can decipher the word problem and figure out which of the hundreds of formula to use.

science of passion, by Antonella Zara

Everything started with a great love. In fact, I believe that everything usually starts, somehow, through love. In my case, the greatest changes in my life came through the men that I have loved. Thanks to Life, I loved a lot, I loved profoundly and intensely, and all that I have learned, I learned by loving. Only by going through all the pains and all the pleasures of love, without the reservations of not loving out of fear of what would happen, or what other people would think, there I found within me the energy necessary to believe in dreams. The first big dream that I fulfilled three years ago was to walk the eight hundred kilometer trip of the Santiago's journey, an illuminating trek that I recommend to anyone that wishes to grow spiritually. This trip helped me understand new things about Life and about myself, and also helped me better appreciate its beauty. After this marvelous experience, I went through a very difficult time. The journey had given me the strength to endure that difficult time in my life. After all those beautiful and harsh experiences, my faith in life had increased by leaps and bounds. I then understood that either pleasure or pain are gifts given by Life to those who seek to find themselves. At that time in my life, full of gratitude and love for existence, I tried to find again a man with whom I had shared a beautiful love story. This was at the same time a heartbreaking and marvelous reunion. Sad, because time and distance made that love change, and we could not revive the sublime passion that had united us before. Marvelous because that passion that had been so special, even if it would not manifest itself between us as man and woman once again, but only for the fact that I saw him again, unleashed in me a process that was magical and irreversible. Ever since that encounter I became aware of the existence of another person inside of me. I realized then that She had always been present, but more that ever I had perceived Her clearly. At first, this new sensation was strange to me, even though it filled me with a sort of happiness unknown until then. I wondered if this phenomenon happened only to me, if I was finally going crazy, if I had to seek medical help. But it was so good that it just couldn't be a sickness! I resolved then to deepen my knowledge on the subject, and I came across vast literature that dealt with this kind of spirituality that had flourished in me. I began to understand that I had come into contact with what is called the “Higher Self”, the divine part, the soul, the particle of God that exists in everyone! I noticed that I had received an immense gift from Life as a reward for going after my dreams. For many people this might be incomprehensible or even absurd, which is perfectly natural, because it is not possible to understand something which is unknown. But I have also come to understand that for a growing number of people, the spiritual search is not only an intellectual past time, it is a vital necessity, something that is put into practice and lived day by day. With “The Science of Passion”, I hope to contribute to the search of some of these people, since my greatest dream is to be a channel of Light for my fellow man.

About the Author
At the age of 27 I experienced a strong existential crisis that made me question the very essence of my being. After walking 800 km and completing a sacred pilgrimage in the heart of Spain, in 1999, my life changed drastically. I had an ulcer on my cornea which almost made me lose my eyesight, I separated from a relationship of 10 years, I had a mystical experience and wrote "The Science of Passion". This book helped me to understand and overcome many of the hardships and difficulties that accompanied this emotional death and finally it helped my rebirth into a new life in which magic was not just a romantic idea, but the subtle organic fabric life is made of. I never lost the connection to my inner Goddess, which was awakened in those days of my tempestuous quest and then flourished as the greatest blessing of my life through the writing of this book. My wishes and desires were answered and met in ways unimaginable to me before. Paulo Coelho, a renowned writer and a modern prophet, my mentor and a beloved friend, used parts of this book in his novel "Eleven Minutes" which was read worldwide and has been opening many doors for "The Science of Passion" to slowly find its ways into many hearts all over the world. I met the "enchanted prince" I called for in the book and dreamt about for such a long time. He made me discover shades of emotions that I did not even imagine I had in myself, from extreme tenderness to bursting anger, from the heights of lust and mysticism to the valleys of despair and sadness. Thanks to his exquisite guidance, I saw it all and still feel there is so much more to see. He is an artist and a poet, an actor and a singer, my dearest master and a wise madman. Life has become so much more colorful and delightful under his touch. We have been traveling the world together for ten years, we got married three times, and I found out that it is really possible to have a passionate and exciting relationship. Being in love does not have to fade and stop over the years, it is a fire that can be kept alive and has the power to create entire universes, a spiritual mission that may grow infinitely, an unfolding adventure full of uncountable surprises and lessons, if not taken for granted and well taken care of.

It's marvellous!!! Remarkable......
By Micha
About this book I can say first of all: WOW!!!

It has been a while since I have come across a book that has made me stay up all night reading, which is exactly what this book did to me. I think one of the charms of the "Science of Passion" is the way you can relate to the connecting thread of humanity in each of us - loneliness (even with a fellow;-), desire to love and be loved, to find the grat love, TRULY live, be happy, understand, etc. - and especially to keep the passion! And I felt that I came across this book at just the right moment in my life (I read it the first time about 3 years ago and it's still a part of my life).

The "Science of Passion" changed my life; it was/is a channel of light for me. It truly touched my heart, my soul; very deeply! The "Science" helped me to see some things clearer and to open my heart and listen to it. I began to observe more, paying attention to EVERYTHING, every moment, every movement, every gesture; I'm more carefully, living more passionate... I see things, I never have seen before; every day, every minute, every second. The book helped me to find my "inner light". I myself learned a lot from the "Science of Passion"; I found out so much, about me, about Love, about Life... The "Science" teached me to see and live the world with passion. Und how wonderful this is!!!

The "Science of Passion" gives deeply insights in the soul from a woman, exposes desires and longings, a story for reflection. This book can help you on your journey to find yourself. It's a book for all who are longing for love ("everything starts with a great love";-), who wants to keep the love and wants to live passionate - if you want: lessons for the reader.

Thanks to Antonella Zara for these wonderful amazing lines - floating like a river, simply pure energy! (it's surely no chance that an autor like Paulo Coelho took a lot of these lines for one of his books - by the way: I found the "Science of Passion" more remarkable than his "Eleven Minutes";-)

So thank you Antonella Zara so much for all the inspiration!!!

Mathematics for Economics (MIT Press), by Michael Hoy, John Livernois, Chris McKenna, Ray Rees, Thanasis Stengos

This text offers a comprehensive presentation of the mathematics required to tackle problems in economic analyses. To give a better understanding of the mathematical concepts, the text follows the logic of the development of mathematics rather than that of an economics course. The only prerequisite is high school algebra, but the book goes on to cover all the mathematics needed for undergraduate economics. It is also a useful reference for graduate students. After a review of the fundamentals of sets, numbers, and functions, the book covers limits and continuity, the calculus of functions of one variable, linear algebra, multivariate calculus, and dynamics. To develop the student's problem-solving skills, the book works through a large number of examples and economic applications. This streamlined third edition offers an array of new and updated examples. Additionally, lengthier proofs and examples are provided on the book's website. The book and the web material are cross-referenced in the text. A student solutions manual is available, and instructors can access online instructor's material that includes solutions and PowerPoint slides. Visit http://mitpress.mit.edu/math_econ3 for complete details.

Review

Mathematics is the language of economics, and this book is an excellent introduction to that language.

(George J. Mailath, Walter H. Annenberg Professor in the Social Sciences and Professor of Economics, University of Pennsylvania)

While there are many mathematics texts for economics available, this one is by far the best. It covers a comprehensive range of techniques with interesting applications, and the numerous worked examples and problems are a real bonus for the instructor. Teaching a course with this book is enjoyable and easy.

(Kevin Denny, University College Dublin)

My university still uses this book, and I was skeptical about the price being low, but then found out that there are quite a few newer versions. Book is in EXCELLENT condition. No marks, no grime, no snags, no crimped pages. Brand new looking and glossy. No pages missing. I was pleased with my purchase
