He possesses three masters degree in Statistics, Psychology and Computer application besides PhD degree. He has this unique distinction of being 1st position holder in M.Sc. (Statistics) from Kanpur University as well as in M.A (Psychology) from Jiwaji University, Gwalior. He has successfully guided six PhD candidates and has 3 books and 28 research papers/articles to his credit. He acted as a visiting faculty for various management institutes. He was also visiting fellow to the University of Sydney in 2002. He has visited countries like Australia, Poland, Scotland, Bangkok and Nepal for various academic assignments and conducted numerous workshops in the area of Applied Statistics and Research Methodology. Dr. Mohammad Ghufran is presently Professor of Psychology in Kumaun University, Nainital (Almorha Campus). He has been actively associated with teaching and research for more than 22 years. His main area of research is Personality and Social Psychology. He has published more than 35 research articles and a book on Guidance and Counseling."

She began her career in coffee working as a barista and has since judged regional barista competitions and written for Barista Magazine. She also writes about food and has produced several travel guides, including Secret Portland and Secret Vancouver.

Between the hours of nine and five, she is the communications director for the Graduate School of Education and Counseling at Lewis & Clark College and the managing editor of Democracy & Education, an academic journal of progressive education theory.

Hanna lives in Portland, Oregon, with her husband, where they possess an entire kitchen cabinet full of devices for making coffee. She pollutes her morning cup with one sugar and a spoonful of cream, but takes all afternoon espresso neat.

A great introductory book for everyone in the field of specialty coffee

This is really a great book that I will recommend to anyone who is trying to get into the world of specialty coffee. It begins with a little bit of knowledge teaching, not too much that if you have already been brewing your own coffee with your Hario V60 or Rancillio Silvia for a while, you will probably find the content to be too little. However, the vivid writing from Hanna makes the reading a great experience by itself. The rest 2/3 part of the book, as the title says, depicts individual coffee shops/roasteries from San Francisco to Seattle. This is not for tour-guiding to show you where you can find the best coffee, but a well-written account of individual coffee roasters and the history of coffee culture along the way. From the text, you will find the gourmet spirit of coffee making and the current efforts to improve the quality and knowledge of this world's most consumed beverage.

For beginners, this book is a prefect 101 textbook. For seasoned drinkers, despite the fact that you might have heard or have tasted most of the coffee, this handy, beautifully designed, well-written book is still a great addition to the collection of one's coffee gears.

Oh, were this book more international in scope! Not that it probably could be either.

In essence this is a guide to 55 key companies in Washington, Oregon and Northern California who have placed coffee, great coffee, firmly centre to their business. Whether they are artisan roasters, mega corps like Peet's and Starbucks or even growing regional chains such as Blue Bottle, the author has carefully and lovingly researched and presented the background, coffee 'roasting history' and style behind each company.

Preceding all of this great information is a wonderful "coffee 101" primer that does not have any airs of grandeur or pretension (that so many similar coffee books tend to have). It is just frustrating that a lot of this good information will be out of reach for many coffee-lovers who might not be able to make a pilgrimage to the West Coast.

The book's design is quirky but engaging. Drawing you in to read about things you might not get chance to experience, whilst managing to make you seethe with jealousy and envy at the same time. The first part of the book is also great for the coffee-newbie who is not ashamed to learn. It is just unfortunate that the latter part of the book serves to tease a large proportion of its potential audience, describing in great detail what they are missing.

If you love coffee and live in reach of the areas covered in this book, it is a relatively inexpensive guide to places worth investigating. If you love coffee but don't live in the area, you might need to think carefully if you can cope with the disappointment of reading but not experiencing great things. If you just want to get behind the mystery of coffee and the oft-strange terms that surround coffee this could be a great little book for you.

There's not a lot more one can say about this book! Note to the author: Maybe you could develop this as a sort of franchise, being the coffee world's version of Zagat's, so the love can be shared around the world!

One of the best coffee books ever!

This book is amazing. I especially like it because there is something for everyone. The way it's split between how to and where to is really cool. The instructions on how to make coffee are very accurate. Another highlight is the illustrations. I've been to a lot of the shops that are in this book and I think Hanna is spot on. The book highlights a lot of great roasters from the micro set to the mega corporations. This book belongs on your bookshelf.

Burns & Allen: Entertainers! ("If people wanted to see something that would make them feel bad, hospitals could sell tickets.”)

“I never cared what name I was working under, as long as I was working. And usually it was easier to change the name of the act than the act.”
Nathan Birnbaum, a.k.a. George Burns, enjoyed being in show business and that is made clear in this ode to the memory of Gracie. But, for Gracie, apparently, it was a different story: “One night in a restaurant someone asked her [Gracie] if she missed the good old days. She laughed. “They’re always talking about the good old days,” she said. “Believe me, the really good days are right now.” “So, at least for the first few years of her retirement, I think Gracie was finally able to enjoy herself.” George Burns has nothing but praise for Gracie herein and characterizes her as a consummate professional who had to memorize countless routines and dialogue and did so with almost no faults. He gives himself far less praise and minimalizes his contributions as half of the famed duo of Burns & Allen with comments such as:
“All I had to do was stand next to her and imagine some of the applause was for me.”

But is also comes out in this book that George Burns was the manager of “Burns & Allen,” made all their bookings, wrote their early routines and came up with the concept of their TV show, executive produced it and oversaw the scripts. I have watched most every film that Burns & Allen appeared in. I have listened to dozens of their radio programs (available for free online from many sites) and consider their TV show (1950-58) to be one of the best shows in US television history and remarkably unique for the technique how Burns broke the set barrier to talk directly to the camera. He was a consummate professional, as well, and this book was worth the 5-6 hours that it took me to recall the careers of George Burns & Gracie Allen by reading this book.

By the way, I am in my 40s only and only discovered Burns & Allen sometime when I was in university and stumbled across a channel in the middle of the night showing Burns & Allen. It is still one of my favorite shows (in my top 5 at least).

Great Story, Great Couple

This is the second time I have purchased this particular book. I bought it when it first came out and somewhere along the line I loaned it to someone who never returned it. This book is full of stories that I had never heard about the famous comedy couple. As a guy I hate to admit it but there were some tear jerker parts in the book that watered my eyes. A story of a truly in love couple in a Hollywood, that today, is sadly lacking in these types of couples.

Loved them then, and loved the book. Its no literary masterpiece, but never promised to be one. You can read it thru in two or three nights, or put it down for 3 weeks and start in again. (pssst. its as much about George as it is Gracie)

SO MUCH In One Book!

I have read a number of Elizabeth Clare Prophet's books, not to mention hundreds of other spiritual, metaphysical and 'New Age' tomes. But this must rank among my top ten favourite books on esotericism and the spiritual path. There is SO MUCH in this book that I defy anybody to review it subject-by-subject. The text is actually taken from a summer retreat of several days' duration at Mount Shasta: I only wish I had been there. Wonderfully-worded and profoundly powerful 'dictations' or transmissions from higher beings--from the Great White Brotherhood of the title--are intersperced with deeply intriguing and highly practical transcribed lectures by the author on a bewildering array of mystical topics. The astounding story of how George Washington and the Founding Fathers have been documented to have been divinely guided in creating the United States; the relationship and organization between the three kingdoms of divine life: of angels, elementals and humanity; a totally new approach to astrology;--all this is here, and that's just the start of it. Come to think of it, whenever I pick up this book, I really do feel as though I am at the foot of Mount Shasta, bathed in its spiritual Light, after all. In my opinion, this will always be an absolute classic book on the spiritual hierarchy of this world and of Their work in uplifting all peoples.

A Great Book

This is a great book. You need to open your mind and heart; and this book will enlighten your path, whatever it is. You can be a Christian, Jew, Buddhist or Hindu and I'm sure you will get something good out of this book. I highly recommended it, if you can open your heart to it. The end result will be the same you will love it as I did.

ONE OF ELIZABETH CLARE PROPHET'S "MAJOR" BOOKS

Elizabeth Clare Prophet (1939-2009) founded The Summit Lighthouse with her husband Mark Prophet (1918-1973), which became the Church Universal and Triumphant in 1975. The Church lost members after her failed prophecies of nuclear war in the 1980s-1990s, and Alzheimer's Disease caused her to retire from the ministry in 1999. She/they wrote other books, such as Climb the highest mountain: The Everlasting Gospel, Prophecy for the 1980s, The Science Of The Spoken Word, The Lost Years of Jesus, The Lost Teachings Of Jesus , etc. Her daughter Erin also wrote Prophet's Daughter: My Life with Elizabeth Clare Prophet Inside the Church Universal and Triumphant.

She wrote in the Introduction to this 1976 book, "America's place in the destiny of the cosmos comes to the fore under the influence of the hierarchy of Aquarius... Drawn from every nation, from every lifewave and evolution, the American people are chosen as the standard-bearers of an age---not by the favoritism of an anthropomorphic God, but by the choice of a free-will God-ordained. The elect of the Lord are those who elect to be the instruments of the Lord... America is an experiment of the Great White Brotherhood... There is nothing automatic about the fulfillment of a cosmic destiny. America is simply opportunity, the gift of freedom... If indeed there is to be a cosmic destiny forged and won on this continent, it will be because this people have made the work of the ages their own." (Pg. v-vii)

She explains, "An ascended master, then, is one who, like Gautama and Maitreya, Jesus or Confucius or any master you can name, has chosen at a certain moment to be free." (Pg. 26) She later adds, "We have defined 'ascended masters' today as those who've mastered time and space, passed their initiations, balanced at least 51 percent of their karma, and ascended into the Presence of the I AM THAT I AM to become immortal God-free beings. We have said that these masters comprise the Spirit of the Great White Brotherhood---the fraternity of saints who have pledged to serve mankind until all mankind are free in the ritual of the ascension." (Pg. 59)

She says, "The knowledge of the I AM presence was first revealed in the 1920s and 30s by Godfre [Ray King; see Unveiled Mysteries, etc.], who will speak to us in a dictation this afternoon. He delivered to America and to all mankind the message of Saint Germain, the master of the Aquarian Age, that you and you and you have an individualized God Presence." (Pg. 39) She adds, "[in 1961] I was contacted by El Morya... and also called to be trained as a messenger. I was introduced to Mark Prophet. He became the instrument of my training under El Morya and Saint Germain... I was ordained by the master Saint Germain to represent him and to complete the mission of beloved Godfre Ray King (Guy Ballard)." (Pg. 60-61) Later, she says, "The Summit Lighthouse in the heart of Morya... He contacted his representative Mark L. Prophet in 1958... and said, 'go to Washington, D.C., and found the Summit Lighthouse!'... The Summit Lighthouse was founded to set forth the law, cosmic law, for the Aquarian cycle." (Pg. 292-293) Still later, she says, "Summit University is sponsored by Gautama Buddha." (PG. 274)

She suggests, "There have been great, great women in the history of America who have figured as patriarchs of the law... One outstanding woman who set the law of a new dispensation of teaching is Mary Baker Eddy, who sat at the feet of Jesus as Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus. She set forth in the 1800s a teaching on the science of the immaculate concept..." (Pg. 125) Significantly, she asserts, "Now there are some who say that sacred scripture is the absolute Word of God. Well, where it is the Word of God, it is the Word of God. Where it isn't there, it isn't there... people try to piece together a theology and a doctrine that they say we cannot stray from, when they do not have the whole writing of the law and the Word." (Pg. 255)

She also asserts, "The cult of the Mother, destined to come into prominence in the twentieth century, was the foundation of the civilization of Lemuria. The fall of Mu was the direct result of the Fall of Man, which reached its lowest point in the desecration of the shrines to the Cosmic Virgin." (Pg. 166) She adds, "Antichrist and the fallen ones have had their day... Their consciousness contributed to the wickedness that was accomplished in the days of Atlantis, which led finally to the edict that went forth from the Lords of Karma that resulted in teh flood, the sinking of Atlantis." (Pg. 244-245)

This book is one of Prophet's most detailed "doctrinal" books. It will be of interest to anyone studying the Church Universal and Triumphant, or other "Ascended Masters" teachings.

You can't hold onto the joy of enlightenment

Joko Beck was a very truthful and very wise teacher. She told it as it is. Seeking enlightenment can be very hard and trying but one must be willing to accept all of life's sorrows. The joys won't last for too long. You can't hold onto the joy of enlightenment. She says it's not for us to own as our own. It must be shared. Her style is tough love but the truth is, like the title, nothing special.

CHARLOTTE JOKO BECK IS SOMETHING SPECIAL!

"Nothing Special" is paradoxically something very special. It is a simple and enjoyable read and yet gives much insight into the essence of Zen. I have read many Zen related books and this one stands out as one of the best. It would be valuable to those familiar with Zen and Buddhism, as a reminder that the very root of Zen is "nothing special" and is most often best kept uncomplicated. Even more, this is an excellent book for readers who are unfamiliar but curious about Zen practice and ideas, as the author has a gift for relating the concepts simply and without unnecessary dogma. The question and answer portion at the end of each chapter is also helpful, as her students ask many questions which the reader may have as well. Based upon my reading of her books, it is my opinion that Ms. Beck is one of the true Western Zen Masters. She is one of the few here in America who has managed to keep the Zen in Zen and still make it pallatable, practical, and practicable.
Parenthetically, her other books, "Everyday Zen", and "Now Zen" are equally worthwhile. "Now Zen" is a little compilation book and an absolute gem. It is the first book I would give to anyone who was interested in Zen or what is so special about Nothing.

I think this should be the first book anyone reads on DDD.

The DDD community has needed an easy-to-read book for a long time. This is definitely that book.

I've read Evan's big blue book twice, and while incredibly useful, it is frustratingly hard to follow in places, and is frustratingly verbose. This book by Scott Millett is the complete opposite. Apart from the odd awkward sentence, it is very easy to understand what the authors are trying to say, and they definitely cover all of the advanced topics from the big blue book. To be fair, because this book is newer, it also contains modern advances in DDD like CQRS and Event Sourcing.

Decent DDD book, one of very few

Domain Modeling is hard. Teaching & presenting about Domain Modeling is even harder (I've tried it, honest word). Writing a *good* book about Domain Modeling is ninja-level challenge. And fortunately PPPofDDD is a *good* book about Domain Modeling. Maybe it's more 4.5 stars than 5, but I still believe it's more 5 than 4. Why?

1.) Author does not try to re-tell The Blue Book. I really, really had the honest feeling that his greatest intention was to show how do you use DDD principles while building actual systems. Not just on line-of-code level. And what's important, I think he did it well, at least clearly better than VV in Red Book.

2.) It's quite easy to write about desing in a boring way: either because you being too abstract (only conceptual notions) or to specific (by diving deep into the examples you readers do not give an f-word). But to be honest this book is not boring -> maybe it's author's writing style. Anyway, this book is in general more pleasant to read (& more engaging) than both Blue and Red Book.

3.) There are plenty of references (incl. all examples) to .NET! ;) Ok, it may not be a Pro for everyone, but I appreciate it.

4.) Part IV (which I initially expected a total shit & 'space-filler') appeared to be the best part of the book - very practical & pragmatic. Even if I don't necessarily agree with all the statements (or rather - with some I agree with 'yes, but ...' suffix :>), I really like all the thoughts gathered in such a clear & approachable way.

5.) Any specific points made I've found useful? Yes, some about composability (bounded context & dependencies between them), state pattern & lazy loading.

Cons? Yes, some:

1.) They were at least few examples that didn't really add much value - either too obvious or too bloated (what makes me feel they miss the point or don't have any).

2.) Chapters 9 & 10 are surprisingly shallow. I've kinda expected more. Fortunately book compensates it later.

To summarize: it's a very good book about DDD. It doesn't change the fact that you're supposed to read Blue Book first anyway. But if you're about to choose whether read this one or Red Book ("Implementing DDD"), I believe that PPPofDDD is a better choice.

Comprehensive Library of DDD

This is a comprehensive collection of Domain-Driven Design material, all the way from the theory down to specific code examples. The book does a great job of linking together a number of patterns and practices in a coherent way - describing what architectural patterns, and what design patterns work well with DDD. What I particularly liked about this book is the organisation - the theory isn't interrupted with code examples; they are left to the more practical sections. Like Uncle Bob's "Agile Principles, Patterns, and Practices" books, "Patterns, Principles, and Practices of Domain-Driven Design" is a bit like owning a collection of books on the subject.
