Best practical DSP book

The best book on practical DSP. It has the right balance of theory and practice. I have readen many DSP books. Many books are too theoretical and other ones are too practical. The book also covers some advanced topics that are very well approached for beginners.

In order to taking advantage of the book, I recommend to buy the cheap TI DSP Board (C5515 eZDSP USB Stick Development Tool) for practicing most of the exercises. This board is available for US $ 79 on TI Store.

However, this book is not for everyone (for self study). The reader should have experience on computer architecture, C and assembly programming, and MATLAB. A basic knowledge of DSP concepts is also recommended.

I recommend the book to anyone interested on practicing DSP basic and advanced concepts.

Viking history is not a single continuous story; rather it is a set
of stories very well represented in this READER. One might add this
book helps us understand Viking history in a way superlative to many other attempts. It pictures the restless spirit of the Vikings! Their stories are informative, exciting and often provocative.

The editors are Angus Somerville, a professor who maintains scholarly interests in Medieval history and R. Andrew McDonald,
an accomplished historian of Medieval England, Scotland and the
Isle of Man. The sources used from the British Isles and the
European Continent make this particular book highly relevant to
a better knowledge and appreciation of this fascinating part of
European history.

9. "The Heathens Stayed": from Raiding to Settlement
10. Austrveg: The Viking Road to the East
11. Into the Western Ocean, the Faeroes, Iceland, Greenland, and Vinland
12. Viking Life and Death
13. From Odin to Christ
14. State-Building at Home and Abroad
15. The End of the Viking Age

These chapters contain selections from the medieval literature pertaining to the respective topics. The selections include excerpts from Icelandic sagas (early historical fiction), roughly contemporary histories, and poetry. Most of the selections are short, on the order of two to ten pages.

For the sagas in particular, the excerpts -- from what are often long, and (to the modern ear) somewhat disjoint stories with huge casts of characters -- have been carefully selected to illustrate facets of Viking life. This is a good introduction to medieval Icelandic literature for readers not ready to dive into the full individual sagas.

Translations are good, readable modern English, with enough notes to give the reader some context.

Ella Ervilla (Eaton) Kellogg, nurse, author and dietitian, received her Bachelors of Arts degree (and Masters) from Alfred University. She led training for foster mothers and established a kindergarten and home school, wrote numerous articles on child-rearing and education for "Good Health" magazine from 1877 to 1920. She was a charter member of the American Dietetic Association, member of the National Congress for Mothers, American Home Economics Association member, member of the Women’s League, and member of the Y.W.C.A. She was inducted into the Michigan Women’s Hall of Fame in 1999.

Despite its remarkable achievements, the Brigade's history has largely been lost amid accounts of the sweeping operations that followed. Its real history has been replaced by myths that attribute its success to tough training, great conditioning, unit cohesion, and combat-experienced officers. None of which were true. T. X. Hammes now reveals the real story of the Brigade's success, prominently citing the Corps' crucial ability to maintain its ethos, culture, and combat effectiveness during the period between World War II and Korea, when its very existence was being challenged. By studying the Corps from 1945 to 1950, Hammes shows that it was indeed the culture of the Corps-a culture based on remembering its storied history and learning to face modern challenges-that was responsible for the Brigade's success. The Corps remembered the human factors that made it so successful in past wars, notably the ethos of never leaving another marine behind. At the same time, the Corps demonstrated commendable flexibility in adapting its doctrine and operations to evolutions in modern warfare. In particular, the Corps overcame the air-ground schism that marked the end of World War II to excel at close air support. Despite massive budget and manpower cuts, the Corps continued to experiment and learn even at it clung to its historical lodestones. This approach was validated during the Brigade's trial by fire. About the Author
T. X. Hammes retired from the Marine Corps in July 2005 after thirty years of service. He received his Ph.D. in modern history from Oxford University and is Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for National Strategic Studies, National Defense University, and author of The Sling and the Stone: On War in the 21st Century.

From One Who Was There

I have just finished this book. Based on the descriptions and some comments, I was ready to seriously criticize many of the statements. I need not do so. I would like to clear some points. No comment on the descriptions of the Brigade actions other than they are as they have been written before. Let me state that I served with H&S Co.1stBn.,5thMar.in the Brigade. The 'myth'that we were led by experienced World War 2 veterans was very real to us. We 'Green' troops (I was a Sgt.but green), only knew that the Staff NCOs and most officers above 2ndLt. had served in the war. That was all we needed to know. Whether they had seen combat or not never entered our minds. I guess that's the Marine Ethos, Culture or whaever you want to call it. They were our leaders, they had served in the War. We knew that Col. Newton had been a POW. I did not know about the lack of combat experience until I read this book. Amazing, from the way they fought their commands, it's no wonder we believed they were experienced combat leaders.
Mr Hammes makes a big point of the limited training during the 1949/1950 Winter. That is very true, as the 5thMar had just been organized in October. The only large operation I remember from that period was the airlift to San Nicholas Island. However there was a substantial trained 'cadre' on hand when the Brigade was formed. Many of us had been with the Division since 1947. I joined 1/6 in Sept. 1947. In October that became BLT-6, 2/6 became BLT-7 (BLT-6 became 1/5, 7 became 2/5 in 1949). From that point on through 1948 and 1949 we were constantly in the field or participating in amphibious operations, real or simulated, MajGen.Erskine made sure of that. Granted, there was turnover as men were discharged. I don't recall the turmoil of 'Summer transfers'. That was probably an officer thing, because we did have at least three battalion commanders that I can recall before Col.Newton. If I recall correctly one was LtCol.H.P.Crowe.
All in all, a fine book though.
EDIT- I'd like to add one more item. During the dark days of '48'49 when the fate of the Corps was being argued in upper echelons, there were many discussions in the barracks. Primary among these were what were to be the troops options. We (PFCs, Cpls and Sgts)generally felt there were only two. We would be released from service or absorbed into the Army. The second option was not acceptable. We were prepared to DESERT rather than serve in the Army. Some had made inquiries about the French Foreign Legion. We felt the situation very seriously, but we never mentioned any of our thoughts to our senior NCOs.

All Marines please note:

I titled my review of this book for all marines(no exes here!) because it really explains the ethos of the marines. The Pusan Perimeter was truly a last stand and the Marines came through. I was in a long time ago(56 to 59) and recall the true austerity that was (and probably still is ) true; Korean War bulk rations (stew etc) in the mess hall years after the war and no frills at all. Dr. Hammes book tells in detail the reason for this thrift. The Marine leadership Knew they would be called, and knew the cupboard was bare.. it was essential to save every asset to be ready. The combat load for Guadalcanal comes to mind when you read of the preparations for Korea and how all elements of the Corps came together to do what would be impossible for any other organization. The book is not an easy read,Dr Hammes includes a lot of scholastic research; but is well worth the effort. I began to understand many things that simply were not clear to a 18 year old kid in 1956. If you are a marine(even an old timer) or wish to be a Marine, the saga of the Marines at the Pusan Perimeter is essential reading. I spent 3 years in Pusan in the late 80s as an army civilian employee and the history of this area was particularly interesting. I knew of the perimeter, but not of the extraordinary effort of what were actually average Marines. Great stuff! read the book and thank thos guys for their accomplishment.

An excellent book on the USMC from 1945-1950

This book is as much about the organizational and doctinal evolution of the US Marine Corps between the end of World War II and the beginning of the Korean War. It is as well written and well researched as it is illuminating. I highly recommend it.

The first English-language, multivolume reference work on ancient Egypt that spans all fields--archaeology, biography, history, language, social history, and more--combined with the imprint of arguably the world's most famous name in reference publishing results in work that, not surprisingly, should find its way to the shelves of virtually all public, academic, and even some secondary-school libraries. The ancient Egyptian civilization is one that has fascinated people from all walks of life for centuries, but it is only now that we have an English-language reference work that does justice to all aspects of this fascinating civilization.

In development since 1994 (according to the preface), The Oxford Encyclopedia of Ancient Egypt (OEAE) "provides students, scholars, and the merely curious with the latest information on the civilization . . . tracing its history through the Islamic conquest of 642 CE--although the focus is on dynastic Egypt and its cultural complexity." Editor-in-chief Redford, of Pennsylvania State University, whose credits include being director of the Akhenaten Temple Project, has overseen a work featuring essays from more than 250 contributors from various countries and scholarly pursuits, all with solid academic credentials from institutions such as the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Universitat Heidelberg, University College London, University of Chicago (and its Oriental Institute), and many more. The preface outlines the decisions made on transliteration as well as the particularly thorny problem of a common chronology, as "it would ill serve the pedagogic and synthetic overview purposes of the present work to allow each contributor to decide on his or her own schema."

OEAE features more than 600 scholarly yet eminently readable articles. Many of the lengthier articles are subdivided, each article subdivision with its own author. Sculpture, for example (at 33 pages the longest entry in the set), contains five separate articles: "An Overview," "Royal Sculpture," "Private Sculpture," "Divine Sculpture," and "Wood Sculpture." Each of these is signed by the author and includes its own bibliography. Other entries with similar subdivisions include the 26-page Grammar (divided into "An Overview," "Old Egyptian," "Middle Egyptian," "Late Egyptian," "Demotic," and "Coptic") and the 18-page Myths ("An Overview," "Creation Myths," "Osiris Cycle," "Solar Cycle," and "Lunar Cycle.") The bibliographies concluding every article are themselves virtually worth the price of the set, assembling sources from all languages and time periods. In keeping with the work's attempt to be a synthesis of contemporary scholarship "that would describe in detail where Egyptology stands, as a whole, in the year 2000," it is refreshing to see many bibliographies listing several works bearing publication dates in the 1980s and 1990s.

There are many noteworthy entries in OEAE. Apart from the entries noted above, there are detailed discourses on topics as wide-ranging as Beer, Family, Hairstyles, Intoxication, Marriage and divorce,^B and Social stratification. Of course, there are plenty of entries on topics most closely associated with ancient Egypt: Horus, Isis, Osiris, Pyramids, and Tombs. There are also entries on some of those responsible for famous discoveries, such as Howard Carter, the discoverer of the tomb of Tutankhamun, and on topics of interest to the field of Egyptology as a whole (e.g., Egyptology, interpretation of evidence). There is even an article on Reference works, listing the more prominent titles in the field, divided by area of study. Maps are incorporated with wonderful effect, making one wish there were many more. The entry Theban Necropolis includes a plan depicting the location of various temples in relation to one another. Valley of the Kings has a full-page map showing a more-detailed plan of this famous area.

There are some 400 black-and-white illustrations scattered throughout the text. The majority are photographs, but there are also some line-drawn maps and other drawings. Readers will also find a section of colored plates in volume two. OEAE concludes with a "Directory of Contributors," a "Synoptic Outline of Contents," and a detailed index that indicates page references for main entries in bold type. The "Synoptic Outline" is a particularly worthwhile enhancement, divided by major headings ("Egyptology," "Land and Resources," and "Religion," for example) with subdivisions within those, listing all articles covering the topic.

There is no direct competitor to The Oxford Encyclopedia of Ancient Egypt, given its interdisciplinary nature. The Encyclopedia of the Archaeology of Ancient Egypt (Routledge, 1999) focuses primarily on archaeology and does not include some of the sociological articles the present work does (plus, at $250 for a single volume, it is pricey). Margaret Bunson's The Encyclopedia of Ancient Egypt (Facts On File, 1991) and Rosalie David's Handbook to Life in Ancient Egypt^B (Facts On File, 1998) are shorter and less scholarly in tone and more appropriate for secondary schools. The Oxford Encyclopedia of Ancient Egypt, with articles that should be understandable to an interested layperson, should find a home in most libraries. Though the $475 price tag may give smaller libraries some pause, one is not likely to encounter another work of this magnitude on a subject of such universal interest for some time. RBB

Donald B. Redford is a historian and archaeologist who has worked extensively in Egypt since 1975, directing a number of important excavations, notably at Mendes and Karnak. A professor at Pennsylvania State University, he is the author of many books, including "Akhenaten: The Heretic King" (Princeton). The Complete Ancient Egypt

The most complete source that can be found on the subject of ancient Egypt. It contains everything one would want to know about the civilization in an easy to use fashion. Written by the who's who of egyptology and covering its entire history.
There are a couple problems with the encyclopedia. The first is that most of the pictures are in black and white and of a lower quality. The most frustrating problem is that different aritcles sometimes use different spellings for the same god or person for example, the goddess of Lower Egypt can be found spelled Wadjet, Wadjyt, and in one article she is reffered to as Uto and in the caption to the picture on the same page she is reffered to using Edjo. Each spelling has to be refferenced in the glossary seperately, only showing the the page indicating to that particular spelling and not the rest. This makes it somewhat more difficult to find certain information (familiarize yourself with as many spellings as possible).
These shortcomings are small and aren't enough to lower its score. What remains most improtant is that it is still the best, most up-to-date, and accessible reference work out there (a five all the way).

Definitive but poorly presented

This is an A-Z of Egyptology which will act as a definitive reference. Two downsides:
1) There is no narrative introduction to the subject, so this Encyclopedia would complement a 'history', but not replace it
2) The photographs are in black and white and are often bad quality: badly focussed, badly lit.

Best Reference Book on Egypt Available

This is a 3 Volume Encyclopedia and does consist of 1880 pages. It is the most authorative book that the non professional person wanting to learn about Egypt can obtain. Some of the other reviews (1 star) do not make sense to me and they must be talking about some other set of books.

I would share this book!!!

Martha Doesn't Share! is a delightful book about an adorable otter named Martha who needs tweaking with her social skills. It seems her most favorite word is "Mine".

When baby brother Edwin asks to play with her toys, she quite emphatically tells him, they are hers and hers alone. Mom and Dad Otter urge Martha to take turns, but Martha stubbornly reminds everyone that the toys belong to her and she goes off to play by herself. While performing magic tricks is fun, it's not as enjoyable without an audience. She realizes the "it's hard to ping when you don't have someone to pong." Martha discovers that her toys by themselves cannot bring her the fun and enjoyment she expects. Martha learns that by sharing, she is guaranteed a playmate and finds an amusing solution to her problem. Loved the ending. It reminded me of a similar outcome when my own baby brother and I learned to share.

Cute illustrations, warm colors and an enjoyable read all the way around.

Great book that helps toddlers learn the importance of sharing

This book had many colorful illustrations and the story was simple to understand for both toddlers age children. My 2 year old found it entertaining; she would laugh when Martha said everything was "mine,mine, mine" because she recognized that behavior. The story shows that no one wants to play with Martha when she doesn't share and it can be boring and lonely. My daughter really understood after reading it that sharing wasn't just about being "nice" to others; she also learned sharing made play more fun and benefited her. We loved this book!

Another Amazing Martha Book...YAY!

I am so thrilled that there is a second Martha book to share with my son! Our first Martha book, Martha Doesn't Say Sorry really helped him to understand the importance of apologizing when we have hurt someone. And now a book on sharing--another HUGE topic in our house right now. I absolutely love the Martha books--they tackle important issues for little ones and help them learn life's lessons in a humorous and compassionate way. Keep 'em coming!!!
