The text presents 1,425 words that allow a student to comprehend about 95 percent of all the vocabulary they will ever see in an actual Latin text. The terms found in the present book have been culled from statistical analyses of the works of more than two hundred authors in order to identify the core vocabulary. Were students to start out by learning the 25 most common words on this list, an astonishing 29 percent of all the vocabulary ever needed would be at their command. If a student masters the 300 most frequent words in this list, well over half of all the vocabulary necessary for fluent reading will be theirs. The goal of the book is to provide the student with the most efficient way to learn vocabulary. Chapters 1 and 2, in particular, are designed for drill, review, and study. The first chapter draws together all words that share the same grammatical classification. For example, all third declension neuter nouns are brought together in one place, with their definitions. By listing the vocabulary in grammatical groups, all the words that share a set of endings are assembled for the student: vocabulary and endings thus reinforce each other. Furthermore, each list of terms is broken down into groups of five words for ease in drawing up vocabulary lists to work with. Within the grammatical lists, each part of speech is preceded by an account of how the terms within are distributed. A student thus quickly learns that while there are 413 verbs that need to be mastered, well over one-third of these (157) are found in the third conjugation, while only about one per-cent (21) will be found in the fourth conjugation. With such information, independent students or instructors can prioritize their study and assignments more appropriately. In the second chapter, large parts of the vocabulary, with their attendant definitions, are regrouped by topics. A student who wishes, therefore, to focus on nature, human emotions, or military issues, will find such vocabulary conveniently grouped together. Chapter three lists the vocabulary terms from the most frequently occurring words to the least frequent. Students or instructors who wish to lean more heavily on the most (or least!) frequently occurring terms within their drills and studies can thus consult this frequency list. After the frequency list, the fourth chapter presents an alphabetical index of the terms. Two final chapters close the text. The first is a list of endings and paradigms for nouns, adjectives and verbs. Complete paradigms and endings are given for review. The final chapter provides the student with an additional one hundred words that are uniquely common in the Latin of the Middle Ages. These one hundred words, if added to the mix, would give the student a Mediaeval vocabulary that would match the efficiency of the Classical vocabulary that is the main focus of the book. For the effort of learning an additional one hundred words, another 1,000 years of Latin texts open up before the student. As a whole, then, this book offers the vocabulary that forms the core of one thousand seven hundred years of Latin literature. If the goal is to learn to read Latin with joy and ease, then the vocabulary terms in this book are one of the major keys to success. By learning these terms, a student’s vocabulary should be ready to tackle the Latin of any era from the Classical period to the Renaissance.

Exactly right, Extremely helpful!

First of all, no book will teach you vocabulary unless you are willing to sit down and do the work and the coverup exercises and the basic drills. But if you are willing to put in the work, this is the book to learn real vocabulary from.

I have to say, it is the kind of book you *grow* to really love. At first it's fine but the more you work with it, the more you figure out how it all fits together and you start to "get" how the different lists work with each other. Then it really hits you how powerful a tool the thing is. The best part, I think, is the way the words are grouped up grammatically. In other words, all the words that you are going to want that have a second declension masculine set of endings are all placed right there together in one spot, and you can knock out every one of them while refreshing your drills on the endings too. And every noun and adjective and verb is grouped up that way. Perfect!

A couple of caveats: I found the topical lists to be less interesting, but that's really just a personal preference I suppose. Others may love it. I just didn't. The grammatical summary (really just the endings and a bit of commentary) was mostly brilliant for review, but sometimes it was too much information and other times I would have liked a little more. But again, that's probably just a matter of where you are in your own studies, I guess. I'm reviewing after a time away so what I need depends on what I've forgotten and what I am remembering, really. By the way, the book I have has grey shading instead of the yellow highlighting you see on the amazon site. I would have preferred the yellow, perhaps; it looks a bit cheerier. But the grey is fine and life goes on.

Finally, though, there are the prepositions. Those really are a place where I think less would have been more. They either need a simpler set of definitions or they need longer explanations to distinguish the shades of meaning a bit more.

I don't mean to be too particular, but the prepositions were frustrating in that way. If I could give it 4.75 stars, I would. Still, the thing is first rate. If you are willing to do the work, this book will be a good friend in your studies.

Very Helpful for Teaching

When I ordered this book I was wondering why I was. The "1400" list, known to Latin teachers because it is the 1400 most frequent words in Latin is available throughout the internet for free.

What makes this worth the purchase is the further classifications of words that Williams does. The traditional grammar-oriented lists (1st declension, 2nd declension etc) exist but also topical lists such as feelings, body, texture and density, etc which makes writing my own stories for TPRS and comprehensible input easier. I will use it to also emphasize words in our Latin textbook that are the most important.

One thing I appreciate is the proofreading. While I am sure computer logarithms were used in determining these 1425 words, no weird errors appear. I once bought a "Most common words in Vergil" app which suggested suo, suere to sew was one of the most common verbs in Verbs. No. Aeneas doesn't smock. This book, gratefully, has been vetted by a conscientious teacher and many peers who cared about the accuracy. I have not found a single macron out of place.

A language is words, dear reader.

Languages consist of words. Even if you have a fair scheme of the grammar (certainly imperative in Latin) if you do not know the words, you may as well have had your tongue cut out.
There is a secret here. The core vocabulary even of great languages is not all that big (which is why teenagers can exist). Consider English: 'haruspicate,' 'newel post,' and 'pastern' are perfetly good English words, present in dictionaries. If you are not a vet. or a house-carpenter how ofen do you use them? Once in five years? Never? Now consider 'revere,' 'invest.' This book has discovered--one would think by computers, but the foundation work was done in 1939--that 85% of the vocabulary of 200 classic Roman writers consists of 1325 words (another hundred or so are added separately for Medieval writers--whom this book quite rightly takes seriously). This can easily be learned by any studious person.
It gets better. Many of these words have English descendants and are very easily learned. Many other are compounds of other words and so have identical grammar (this book, quite rightly, makes you learn the declensions of nouns and adjectives and the conjugations of verbs).
It is very well organized. The words are first presented by class (noun, verb, adverb) then, again, by context (war, religion and the gods, law and society, etc.). There is a section in which words are presented precisely by frequency of use (the most common word in Latin is 'qui (quae, quod).'
There is also a back section of digest grammar and grammatical paradigms. If you start to study Latin youi will find your living room littered with these, for most books supply them. But these are beautifully clear and admirably set forth. These alone are worth most of the price of the book. I agree with another reviewer that the prepositions are a nightmare--but that's the Romans, I think, not this book.
The book is extremely generous in second and alternate meanings of words. This, as you advance in Latin, is essential. The full vocabulary of Latin, as of Italian, is not vast; like Italian it solves this by attaching a great many meanings to many words. This, most especially in poetry, is a waiting trap. The word that supplies our "petition" is "peto--ere" often "ask for" or "seek." So, a sentence, "Germanun petivit, et corpus in silvam proiecit." "He asked the German, and threw the body in wood." What? Well, no. It turns out the first meaning of "peto"--nothing to do witih "petition"--is "to fall upon, attack." If you thoroughly read "Essential Vocabulary" you woiuld know this. Tricksy it is, very tricksy.
If you are learning Latin in or out of class, get this book! It's that simple. It will make every exposure to Latin text vastly more secure, hugely more enjoyable. This book is a treasure. It is incredibly worth the price.

This is not a "how to do" Rolfing� Structural Integration, book. However, it is a window into the considerations of good human structure that motivated her in the founding of structural integration. The illustrations and their textual accompaniments make a good read in themselves. Many of these thoughts, so wild and crazy in their day, have become common knowledge, here explicated more fully.

In the fifties, we're always told, the food industry barged into the American kitchen, waving TV dinners, and destroyed home cooking. Not so fast, Shapiro says. As she reveals, women refused many of the new convenience foods. Fish sticks they accepted, but not ham sticks. Canned peaches, yes; canned hamburgers, no. The industry people hired psychologists to help them combat such resistance; the women's magazines, fond of their advertisers, told readers how, by splashing some sherry over the frozen peas, they could still make dinner look as though they had cooked it. The book is very funny, and also subtle. The most interesting character is Poppy Cannon, the foremost food columnist of the period, who, though she started her mint-jelly recipe with lime jello, was a serious feminist and had a long affair with—and eventually married—the head of the N.A.A.C.P. When World War II ended, American industry was left with overcapacity in food manufacture and preservation. Before this could be transferred to domestic use, food manufacturers had to distinguish between what a soldier needed to eat and what a family wanted to eat. Canned and frozen foods appeared in groceries, but American housewives initially rejected most of them. Marketing and modern food science soon overcame objections, television advertising spread the gospel of efficiency, and the 1950s American kitchen and diet were transformed. Shapiro delves into this period of rapid change and comes up with absorbing stories of the era's women. In addition to the familiar tales of the fictional Betty Crocker and cultural icon Julia Child, Shapiro relates the astounding stories of other mid-century foodies such as Poppy Cannon, who publicized convenience foods while falling in love with Walter White, influential NAACP leader, in a time still suspicious of interracial marriage. She also tells of Freda De Knight at Ebony, who studied at the same Parisian cooking school as Julia Child and then brought French haute cuisine into the middle-class African American kitchen. Peeling the Stale Images of the '50s

If Laura Shapiro does nothing more (and she does much, much more) it will have been a very valuable service to rescue Poppy Cannon and her Can-Opener Cookbook from the infamy of '50s dreck. The author, in Something From the Oven, does a superb job of taking the idea of a '50s dinner and making it a more complex and multi-layered idea than is usually represented. She peels away all the stereotypes the decade has been dragging behind it and shows the truth. Canned and frozen foods(including my mother's favourite, the TV dinner) make appearances but the author show how women did not blindly follow every marketing scheme tossed at them. And Poppy, along with such luminaries as Betty Crocker and Julia Child, help populate this rich tale with great personalities, in addition to the many anonymous readers and letter writers to women's magazines and food columns. This is a well researched, enjoyable book that makes the 1950s come alive.

Revealing culinary journalism. Highly recommended.

`Something from the Oven' by Laura Shapiro is subtitled `Reinventing Dinner in 1950's America', referring to the conventional wisdom that home cooking in the 1950's was all about cooking with packaged, canned, frozen, and other commercially prepared foods. Oddly, the most interesting message I get from this book is that in spite of the great expansion of such preparations, home cooks, primarily housewives, did not embrace this trend and generally considered cooking with frozen foods and baking with cake mixes to be a second rate expedient to true home cooking. American home cooks in the 1950s still based much of their cooking on fresh meats, vegetables, and fruits.

One of the other more interesting topics in this book is the fact that the packaged food marketing trend of the 50's was based to a great extent on the efforts the food packagers made to prepare instant food preparations for the American army during World War II. The most famous of these preparations was Spam, which survives to this day, although in the 1950's the book recounts a good half dozen similar brands. Another great impetus to the prepared food movement was the introduction of frozen foods before the war, which reached its apotheosis with Swanson's creation of the TV dinner, created as a solution to the company's being stuck with an especially large shipment of frozen turkeys. As I recall only too well, frozen food simply did not take off as well as we may believe from the vantage point of 50 years later. Most homes simply did not have large freezers and the technology to successfully freeze a lot of foods was simply not there yet. As someone whose father tried to make his fortune by getting into the frozen food distribution business, and wisely getting out of it almost as quickly, I can testify to the fact that the market for frozen food grew a lot more slowly than it's boosters had hoped.

Another interesting perspective is the fact that canned fruits and vegetables date back to the beginning of the twentieth century and while they simply do not and cannot duplicate the flavor of fresh products, they, like Bisquik and Spam today, were simply accepted as a distinct product. Canned pears, pineapple, and fruit salad had their own niches, different from the fresh ingredients.

Packaged cake mixes have not fared nearly as well as canned goods. In the 50's, they were the perfect products for flour companies to replace falling sales of plain white flour, but they were never accepted as a complete substitute for cakes made from scratch. There is no question that these products have improved over the years, but they never reached the point where they transcended their role as a less than perfect short cut, suspicious for their pharmacopoeia of additives.

Aside from setting the record straight on trends in the 50's, the author gives several profiles of the major real and imagined trendsetters of the period. One of the most interesting by far is the story of Poppy Cannon who is probably just barely remembered by older Women's magazine readers and culinary journalists. In the mid-1950s, she broadly endorsed the use of convenience foods, modern appliances, and quick simulations of classic dishes. In writing recipes, she invented words with abandon which would make modern Jamie Oliver's `glugs' of olive oil look positively pedestrian. It is only just that Cannon is not remembered today since her doctrine was based on a basic inconsistency between gourmet dishes and convenience. Unlike James Beard who based good cooking on fresh foods and regional cuisines and whose reputation survives to this day, Cannon's key to gourmet cuisine was fancy preparation. One of the greatest ironies of her career was her association with Alice B. Toklas, whose basic French home cooking was about as different from Cannon's doctrine as you can get. Their friendship was strong, embracing even the gift of a mixmaster to Toklas, until Cannon started pushing Toklas celebrity, which offended Alice's reverence for the memory of her dead companion Gertrude Stein, as Toklas lived primarily to promote Stein's life and works.

Another theme in the book is the dichotomy between home cooking, the world of women in the home, and gourmet cooking, the world of men in the professional kitchen and in gourmet food clubs. One of the oddest comments I have ever seen about a cookbook was a quote from someone who praised `The Joy of Cooking' for having no `womens' cooking recipes. The trend went so far at this time that the great American culinary essayist M.F.K. Fisher used her initials as her byline because it disguised the fact that she was a woman. As she ate her way through Europe, she constantly encountered the opinion that she had a man's taste for food.

It is entirely appropriate that a fair amount of writing appears in the book about Peg Bracken who, unlike Poppy Cannon, is still fondly remembered today and whose book is still used by, for example Karen Duffy, author of `slob in the kitchen'. Shapiro reveals that Bracken really did not hate to cook, she was simply offering ways of easing the demands on housewives to provide tasty meals for their families day after day. So, If cooking was not really your forte, she offered ways to get the job done well without guilt.

It is part of Julia Child's immense legacy that she, and not James Beard or Craig Claiborne or any other male culinary professional changed the face of home cooking in America. She broke down the wall between male and female cooking ethos by demystifying the citadel of gourmet cooking, French cuisine, for the American home cook. She may not have turned American housewives into gourmet cooks, but she indelibly shifted the focus of cooking from cheap and easy flash to good ingredients and basic skills.

This book is highly recommended for anyone interested in American culinary history and its myths.

From Betty Crocker to Betty Friedan

Something From the Oven covers almost everything about American food culture during the post-World War II years until the mid 1960s. There are accounts of the advent of convenience foods, the literature of food, the rise of cooking shows on TV, and the phenomenon of cooking contests such as the Pillsbury Bake-Off.

The topics seem loosely connected, with no particular conclusions drawn. But it's a pop history book, not an academic tome, so sit back and enjoy an entertaining look at food from several historical angles.

Shapiro talks about the post-war need for convenience food. At least, manufacturers wanted there to be a need for convenience foods, whether American cooks agreed or not. There were a lot of experiments in the first days. Successful products included concentrated frozen orange juice and fish sticks. Unsuccessful product proposals included canned deep-fried hamburgers and concentrated distilled water. (I suspect if Shapiro is having us on with that last idea.)

The section on domestic literature was especially fun, although a lot of it had little to do with food. Shapiro discusses Shirley Jackson, Erma Bombeck, Peg Bracken, Bette MacDonald, Jean Kerr, and the Gilbreths of Cheaper By the Dozen fame, among others. She reveals that there was often a big difference between their supposedly non-fiction works and their actual lives. I look forward to rereading these old favorites with this new information in mind, as well as looking up some authors Shapiro mentions that I was not aware of.

The mini-history of Julia Child's career is entertaining, and the extensive bibliography is a treasure trove of further reading ideas. Recommended!

Very few studies of free blacks have attempted to interpret the actions and events affecting them from their own perspectives. At the same time. the search for understanding the antebellum black experience in the South usually has centered on slaves. In Free Blacks in Norfolk, Virginia, 1790-1860, Tommy L. Bogger portrays lives somewhere between slavery and freedom.

A free black community of skilled artisans and semi-skilled laborers emerged in Norfolk around 1800. Some free blacks earned the respect of leading white businessmen, and many enjoyed easy access to credit and steady employment. They showed no hesitation in suing recalcitrant debtors -- black or white -- and until 1805 they could count on the cooperation of court officials in helping them to collect. But from then on. free blacks experienced a steady decline in status that continued throughout the antebellum period. Legal restraints were placed on them at the same time that Norfolk's economy stagnated. and white immigrants arriving in the 1830s entered fields once monopolized by blacks. By the 1850s the free black community was sunk in hopelessness and despair.

Free Blacks in Norfolk, Virginia, 1790-1860 discusses the active roles that blacks played in creating their community, contradicting prevalent images of free blacks at the mercy of whites. While previous studies of Virginia's free blacks have focused on Richmond or Petersburg, developments in Norfolk's free black community also merit analysis. Norfolk also offers the advantage of a population large enough to provide a reliable data base yet small enough to preserve the stories of individual lives. Those interested in African-American history, Virginia history, orthe South in general will find this book a valuable new resource.

Second Time Around

Just when you think a topic is not worth pursuing, a little light bulb comes on that pushes one to take the next step. Free Blacks in Norfolk Virginia 1790-1860: The Darker Side of Freedom examines social history with respect to free slaves. Tommy L. Bogger offers a different kind of scholarship, which involves manumission, slaves paying their way to freedom. Bogger continues research on the issue of post-slavery before the Civil War that scholars neglected in the past. As the subtitle states, "The Darker Side of Freedom", is indeed a true fallacy that Bogger emphasizes throughout the book that involves remnants of enslavement and the lack of opportunity that remained prevalent for those who attempted to live and financially prosper in the city of Norfolk. Literally, they lived in the "shadows" from their white neighbors despite the fact that they were skilled and educated workers. Bogger goes through the evolution of change for Blacks in Norfolk from vibrant optimism to a sense of letdown. For the most part, they too experienced the economic woes that occurred in the city and the influx of European immigrants arriving in the United States who wanted to start a new life as well. Ironically, this dilemma eventually led them to flee the North or further to the South to pursue a better life where they could build and actively participate in communities of their own, which would also contribute to American society as a whole.

The concluding chapters presents much insight to the dwindling situation that Blacks experienced during the nineteenth century. Bogger shows how death and disillusionment took a toll amongst Blacks, and to add to their uncompromising situations, the Yellow Fever epidemic in 1855 occurred, which left thousands dead. However, what is so surprising is that less Blacks died from the disease because their access to free vaccinations.

Overall, Free Blacks in Norfolk is well researched and documented. Bogger takes much of his accounts from unbiased court documents, but it would have been more helpful if there were more authentic voices within his narrative.

Not What I Expected, But Still a Worthy Addition to Fallen Series

I know a lot of readers are extremely torn about whether or not to read this book. I was torn too at first because even though I always felt Cam got the short end of the stick in the last book, I also didn't understand why, after all this time, Lauren Kate was choosing now to revisit the Fallen world. But in the end, my love for Cam won out and I realized I had to read this book. While it wasn't exactly what I was expecting, I did enjoy the novel a lot and think fans of the series will too. The story was a pretty quick read and the pacing of the novel was good. There wasn't much action except at the end, but the conclusion made the book worthwhile. There were some things I couldn't get over, and because of that I had to reduce my rating by a star, but I do think this is a must-read for fans of the Fallen series.

After finding out that Lilith, the mortal Cam fell in love with oh so long ago, is living in constant cycles of Hell, he literally makes a deal with the Devil and has 15 days to convince Lilith that he loves her and she loves him. You should be warned that this is not the same Cam we knows from the rest of the series. And to me, this is one of the downfalls of this novel. While Cam is still Cam in certain ways, and different in others, I just kept expecting a bit more from him. Obviously, his bad-boy, brooding ways weren't going to work in winning over Lilith, but he lost some of the characteristics that made me fall in love with his character in the beginning. I did greatly enjoy Lilith's character. She's tough, and I loved watching her transformation over the course of the story. However, the constant drama between her and Cam did become a bit tedious while reading, and I could have done without some of it. Regardless, I did love Lilith and Cam as a couple, especially when they first met because she wasn't swayed like the typical girls Cam surrounded himself with. She had a lot of sass and was feisty, and I loved it!

One aspect of the story that I really enjoyed was the flashbacks to Cam and Lilith's life when they met the first time in Canaan. Lauren Kate shows exactly what happened between the characters and how their history shaped their characters in the present. The little interludes where we saw these flashbacks was a great way for the reader to learn more about Cam and Lilith's past, and I thought it was a unique way for Ms. Kate to go about revealing their story.

Overall, the story wasn't exactly what I was expecting, and I did want more from Cam's story, but for the most part it was a very enjoyable read that I think will please most fans of the Fallen series. The ending is kind of left open, but it ends nicely, and it was nice for Cam to have his story all tied up.

A powerful story of true redemption. Love is stronger than anything, when it's real and meant to be. I so love Cam and it was great to read more of his past story and what came after Daniel & Luce broke their curse from the last book. Lauren Kate is a wonderful writer and had me captivate with the entire "Fallen" series. I have now bought several paperback copies for friends that love the series as well :)

About the Author
Bernard Goffinet completed his Ph.D. at the University of Alberta, Canada. As a research associate of Dr A. J. Shaw he pursued his interest in the phylogeny of mosses, with a special focus on the evolution of entomophily in the dung mosses. He joined the University of Connecticut in 1999, where he is an associate professor in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. He has co-authored nearly 70 publications. His current research spans choroplast genome evolution in liverworts, the phylogenetic history of the new model taxon, Physcomitrella patens, as well as the evolution of multisymbiosis in lichen-forming fungi.

A. Jonathan Shaw earned his Ph.D. in Botany from the University of Michigan. He was a Post-doctoral Associate at the Natural History Museum, Smithsonian Institution and in the Department of Botany, Duke University, before taking a faculty position in the Biology Department of Ithaca College in 1989. In 1996 he joined the Botany Department (now Biology) at Duke University, where he is currently a Professor. He serves as an Associate Editor for several scientific journals and as Chairman for the Board of Directors, Highlands Biological Station. He has published over 130 scientific papers and book chapters. His research interests include the systematics and phylogenetics of mosses and liverworts and population genetics of peat mosses (Sphagnum).

Great and Interesting Book

The author does a good job at describing what virtual reality is, how it is used, and how it affects us in this book. I’ve learned quite a bit about this concept that I have only seen in movies and television shows. It certainly helped me gain a more informative view of virtual reality and how it affects us now in both positive and negative ways and how the concept may be older than one would usually think.
It’s a great book for anyone who wants to learn about virtual reality and how it plays a part in their lives today. I’d definitely recommend it.

Clear, Thorough, and Interesting

I enjoyed this book very much. The chapters were easy to follow with relevant information. Dr. Hohstadt is not only an amazing author, but also a great professor. I highly recommend you read his book, and if ever the opportunity arises, to take his courses. He is clearly passionate about virtual reality. This book is an eye-opener and interesting!

This was an ok menage story where the two mc's have an open relationship for when their jobs take them out of town. I enjoyed the equine aspect. It was enough without being too much. I wish there was more interaction between Allistair and Mark. Mark's family situation was heartbreaking. Tyler comes off a bit slutty, but when these three get together, things are very hot. Tyler's family was funny, and I wouldn't have minded more with them as well.

Loved that it was three. Though the plot was okay could have been better to me. To me this was a simple short story.
