An outstanding book!

The Third Advent is a very interesting book in which one gets the intuition of global affairs, world economy that are faced by our society. I read two more books by the autor, The Advent and The Legend of Dagad Trikon and I am impressed by his vast knowledge and the wonderful way he shares it with the reader. It's an outstanding book, I enjoyed reading it because I understand the author's message: It is so important to follow Sahaja Yoga practice in personl life and at corporate business level environment, as well to improve our society.

About the Author
Kentaro Toyama is the W. K. Kellogg Associate Professor of Community Information at the University of Michigan's School of Information. He is also coeditor in chief of the journal Information Technologies and International Development and cofounder of Microsoft Research India. Kentaro lives in Michigan.

Life-changing book

For anyone who aspires to use technology for social change, this book could change your life. It certainly changed mine.

Kentaro Toyama takes us on an intellectual yet deeply personal journey through his many years of seeking technology solutions for global poverty. On the one hand, his search was wildly successful: though the book does not tout it, his projects gained widespread acclaim for their creativity and rigor, and he became an authoritative leader of an international research community with similar aspirations. If anyone in the world was going to demonstrate how technology could help the developing world, it was Toyama.

Unexpectedly, however, Toyama's search led him to an inconvenient truth: that technology may NOT be the most important agent of social change. With disarming honesty and humility, Toyama explains how -- time and time again -- the technologies invented by himself and colleagues were most useful to highly motivated and capable organizations, rather than the poor and downcast communities that he sought to help. In other words, technology always served as an amplifier of existing social forces -- including existing inequalities -- rather than offering any particular benefit for the poor.

Due to his unique insider's perspective, Toyama's critique of technocratic solutions is no less incisive than William Easterly's critique of the aid industry. From the slums of Bangalore, to the classrooms of Accra, to the rice fields of Jharkhand and the streets of Karachi, Toyama offers a vivid yet intimate narrative that gently leads the reader to his hard-hitting conclusions. Along the way, Toyama also provides a masterful review of related research findings (including 90 pages of detailed notes and references).

"Geek Heresy" is far more than a critique, however. In the second half of the book, Toyama offers a compelling alternative to a technology-centric view of social change. Instead of investing in technology, we should invest in people. Instead of seeking quick and flashy changes, we should slowly nurture human hearts, minds, and wills. Instead of assessing people's "needs", we should assess their aspirations, and offer mentorship to help fulfill those aspirations.

Ambitious and powerfully presented, Toyama's vision for development holds its own against other heavyweight philosophers, from Adam Smith to Amartya Sen. It forces us to reconsider our assumptions about human growth and well-being, and inspires us to create a brighter and more sustainable future. Transcending his background as a technology researcher, Toyama's message will appeal to innovators, educators, and policy makers alike.

If every mid-career professional could spend a decade traveling the world to apply their talents for the benefit of marginalized populations, I am sure there would be no shortage of epiphanies on hand. But for the vast majority of us who are unable to do that, this book brings the epiphany to the comfort of your armchair. Buy it, read it, share it, but beware: it might just change your worldview.

makes you think hard

Toyama made a minor splash in development circles with an article in Boston Review a few years ago. In it, he destroyed the idea that digital technology can ease poverty by itself. His argument was powerful then, and it seems prescient now.

This book is a radical expansion of his thesis, and it's an impressive effort. Toyama recasts his idea about technology as a Law of Amplification. As before, the Law explains why technology fails. However, in this book, Toyama goes much further. He uses the Law to offer recommendations for the right way to use technology and to stress the central importance of human change.

Part 1
Intro - Toyama's background and set up for the book
Chap. 1 - Digital technology in education doesn't do a lot.
Chap. 2 - The Law of Amplification says that technology amplifies people.
Chap. 3 - The Law debunks common technology myths.
Chap. 4 - Other interventions are also like technology in being quick fixes.
Chap. 5 - A technocratic orthodoxy prevails in modern efforts at social change.

Part 2
Chap. 6 - To use technology well, use it to amplify positive social forces.
Chap. 7 - What really matters in social change is human development.
Chap. 8 - Human development happens through evolving aspirations.
Chap. 9 - National development happens through evolving mass aspirations.
Chap. 10 - Mentorship is the best paradigm for encouraging social change.
Conclusion - "We should see social situations less as problems to be solved and more as people and institutions to be nurtured."

As you can see from the chapters, Geek Heresy is packed with big ideas. Unlike some books that drone on about a single idea, every chapter in this one introduces a new concept that challenges common assumptions. Several times I started off disagreeing with him but then came around. This happened a lot in Chapter 3.

The book is highly readable with good anecdotes from Toyama's personal experience. The pessimism of Part 1 is countered by the inspirational content of Part 2. Portions of the book may be wonky for some readers, but Toyama keeps most of the dense scholarship in the endnotes. Especially if you like to think, this book is a pleasure to read.

Destroying the Myth: A Revelation On Technology and Intervention.

Often thought-leaders focus on technology as a panacea for the world's toughest problems. While technology offers exciting possibilities, there are enormous limitations especially in developing nations -- resources, infrastructure, poor governance, etc -- and technology alone cannot address these challenges.

Dr. Kentaro Toyama understands these issues intimately -- he holds advanced degrees in computer science and physics, was the founding assistant director of Microsoft Research India, and has melded both academics with on-the-ground experiences in examining these problems.

His enormous knowledge-base is evident in "Geek Heresy", but in a way that laymen can understand. I found Toyama easy to digest, compelling in his positions and powerful in his storytelling.

He turns back the curtain on much-lauded "successes" that have garnered headlines, but which few people have bothered to follow up and investigate the effectiveness -- he shows how "a computer for every classroom" fails to deliver, because the programs don't follow the curriculum, there is no funding and support for maintenance, and that programs like "One Laptop Per Child" simply do not translate into educational achievement, especially without teachers and staff. In essence, he dismantles the fallacy of technology as a one-stop shop for poverty intervention.

Simultaneously, he shines a light on underrepresented programs that are hitting high marks outside the usual circles and public limelight. Programs like Shanti Bhavan, which invests in long-term educational intervention and ensures that the children who graduate go onto poverty-alleviating careers.

Toyama's "Geek Heresy" is a must read for anyone interested in understanding why billions of dollars spent on technology and poverty has failed to yield proportional results, and the road we must take to break out of a pattern of failure and onto a new model of successful intervention.

Needs more photographs

This has some helpful information but not nearly enough pictures. It is nearly impossible to truly understand the author's descriptions of the eyes without photographs. A lymphatic rosary is a series of white spots near the outer rim of the iris but there is no photo of this, yet a white in the Iris is supposed to mean something else. Very confusing.

Confusing, lacking examples and equations...

This book is well-intended, covering a fairly wide array of concepts. However, open the book from either the front or back, and you will find nice large, empty inside front and back covers! This is the first chemistry/physics/engineering text I've encountered with no equations, constants and conversions printed immediately inside the covers(or anywhere else, for that matter)! This one fact makes the book difficult and time-consuming to use for completing homework assignments and learning new concepts. A near total lack of diagrams, charts or graphic representation of concepts is also disappointing.

Inefficient and ineffective.

My prof. utilized this text for the first time last semester, and assumed it would be a good text. My background was Chem I, Chem II, Organic Chem, and Quantitative Analysis. I and a classmate with a similar background both found this text to be ineffective and inefficient. For example, one must page to Chapter 5 before finding a periodic table; every chemistry text I've seen thus far includes one on the opening pages. The treatment of atomic orbital energies was the worst I've ever seen - what introductory texts handle with a few well-chosen diagrams was written out into a page of excruciating text (p 146-147). Equations were given, but it was not always readily clear what each symbol stood for; examples were nearly non-existant. I was so excited about this course and I'm just grateful that the instructor was of much higher quality than the text.

Christopher Schroeder is an entrepreneur and angel investor. In 2010, he wrote an op-ed for The Washington Post about the start-ups in Dubai, and was subsequently invited by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to judge a start-up competition in Cairo one week before Tahrir Square. He is on the boards of advisors of the American University of Cairo School of Business and regional start-up resources Wamda and Oasis500. He lives in Washington, DC.

A Primer On The Middle East Startup Scene

Christopher Schroeder has written a very good primer to understanding the startup scene within the Middle East. The key to appreciating this book is realizing that the author is not trying to boil the proverbial ocean. He limits the scope to a few key countries within the region and graciously acknowledges other works for coverage not included within Startup Rising, e.g., the Israeli technology scene. Scope issues aside, Mr. Schroeder does cover a number of areas that any investor or business contemplating entry into the region should note. Too many to list within this review, I found some of the most thought provoking conclusions to be: the pressing need for entrepreneurs to supply job opportunities as traditional industry falters; the increase in online spending--despite historical aversion to credit card usage; the growing opportunities in mobile technology, solar energy and social networks; and the concept of "disconnected development" where the impact of individual projects, in aggregate, lead to transformation of the technology ecosystem.

Of course anyone looking at the region cannot ignore the geopolitical instability, as the recent ouster of the Morsi government in Egypt exemplifies. In response, Mr. Schroeder astutely points out that through the focus on technology, entrepreneurs and investors in the region can withstand any current and future upheaval. The anecdotal examples of perseverance given within the book are truly inspiring.

To close, I would encourage anyone who has an interest in emerging and frontier markets to read Startup Rising. It will force you to rethink your stance and enable you to begin understanding opportunities in the Middle East.

A Spark of Optimism

At a time when the headlines from the Middle East never seem to get better, Startup Rising is a compelling antidote.

The book offers a very different view of what is happening in the Middle East - one not covered by the mainstream media. Schroeder paints a the picture via compelling stories of entrepreneurs throughout the region (with a focus on Arab countries, rather than Israel). Stories of entrepreneurial perseverance are always compelling - even more so here given the macro and micro challenges these entrepreneurs face. The book is a great read from Marc Andreessen's provocative foreword to Schroeder's compelling thesis -- "its not a question of if, but when."

Unlike the litany of non-fiction books that I have recently bought, but not read, Startup Rising pulled me in. Though Schroeder himself is an entrepreneur, not a writer, it's highly readable, and I flew right through it. This is a great read for entrepreneurs, people interested the role of technology in a rapidly globalizing world, and anyone looking for a sliver of optimism about the Middle East.

A great read at a very important time in our history

As someone who has had the privilege of being a part of the internet ecosystem in the Middle East since the year 2000, I learned a lot and found this book to be an extremely useful journey of stepping back, taking stock and reflecting on the past and future state of our regions start-ups and the key forces at play, shaping the future of innovation and entrepreneurship.

Wolfkin are real, right???

S J Himes’ debut novel is one of a series of M/M Paranormal romances that I have read recently which feature Shapeshifters. All of these stories have been good, some even great but for me Wolves of Black Pine is the one standing next to the others with a blinking neon sign above it, saying “I am awesome!”
From this sub-genre, I have grown to expect a heat level bordering on sizzling to scorching. Though there are some intense and extremely erotic scenes between S J Himes’ characters, she uses sex sparingly so that there is always a significant meaning behind the act.
From the beginning of the novel, when we enter the magical history lesson which Gray Shadow is delivering to the cubs, S J Himes works hard to form a deep connection between the Wolfkin and her reader, bringing us into their world and them into ours. The story spans fifteen years and we witness tragedy, loss, betrayal, love and healing and we are a part of the emotional journey of these wolves.
Perhaps the main reason I found myself repeatedly tapping my Kindle at the story’s end, hoping for just a little more, is S J Himes’ perfect characterisation. She creates these individuals in such a way that we understand their motives; we can empathize with their changing emotions and we fear for their safety.
Ghost is the character who we see developing the most; from the lost cub to a talented and huge-hearted Shaman. Yet though Ghost is the wolf I loved the most, every character, even the secondary ones, have an impact on the story and our reaction to it.
Wolves of Black Pine is one of those novels which captured me completely and when I put the book down I was thinking about Ghost, Kane, Andromeda, Gabe and the others – and the next part of their story. Although December seems a long time to wait at least I know I will have something to look forward to in the cold winter! I cannot recommend this book enough . . . so go and buy it now!

Wolves of Black Pine

Wolves of Black Pine. Gosh, where do I start. This is a story about wolf shifters, a story that goes deep into detail, plot, and execution. There's all the regular stuff going on with power struggles, scientists, and evil wolves as well as strong family units. The main wolf that the story sinks into is Luca, later known as Ghost. He's like this throwback to his ancestors. He does things instinctively. He had a rough start but keeps at it with his big heart and fierce determination. His situation grabbed my interest and it never let go.

I can't remember when I read a book this long. Over 400 pages in a m/m shifter book and it's offered with Kindle Unlimited? Wow. Better yet it had all the elements I love in a paranormal shifter book. Strong male leads. Willing to fight for what is morally right yet stand down when needed. It was wonderful watching Ghost come into his own. Even better that his grandfather's words came true and Kane was there for him. In more ways than one.

I don't have any serious nit picks. Maybe that once Cat and her husband were in the compound they were just sort of forgotten. I was expecting a bit more interaction with them. I did expect them to help with recovering the wolves. I also expected River to step up and talk about Ghost's grandfather and mention a few words or offer some basic training or something. It's getting harder to believe that Ghost can be in every situation and still come out ahead with using new and untapped powers. Even his mate should step up and assist if no one else will. Show what he does when dealing with his Voice, how he controls it - But no, none of that is happening. It's just off the cuff reaction and trusting in his Goddess which is fine for awhile. But as time goes on suspending my belief won't cut it.

I am hoping the continuation will be out later this year because even though things were tied up, there's still enough suspense. Not quite a cliff hanger but close. This one is going on my watch list to wait for the next segment. - Dan's Wife

EPIC START TO A SERIES!

This book is just stunning, the way it morphs from when Luca is young and the unthinkable happens, to years later when he is Ghost and living a life far removed from his early years is seamless, which is very hard to do.

We first meet young Luca at a gathering of the Werekin, and he is just a pup and as the youngest grandchild of two very powerful werekin families, he is destined for greatness. When tragedy strikes Luca is separated from his family and believed dead, and Kane who tried to save him takes losing young Luca very hard.

Luca is found by a couple who raise him as a wolf they named Ghost, and they never realize the powerful being that they have in their home. I won't give much more away, but I will say that when Kane and Luca find each other again, sparks fly, no matter how ill timed they are.

Come on the journey with two souls who were destined to find each other and read what happens, both good and bad when they do! I must warn you, you will need book two right when you finish book one, I can't wait for it! Thanks Sj, for an epic tale of two men we can easily fall in love with!
