Be a Survivor

I became a police officer in January of 2002, the same year that Emotional Survival for Law Enforcement was first published. I've often commented on how much police work has changed, just in the thirteen years since I first pinned on the badge.

Now I'm a husband, father and patrol Sergeant, facing the daily challenge of balancing my personal needs with those of my family, command staff and troops. I only recently discovered Dr. Gilmartin's book after it was recommended at the 99th FBI-LEEDA Supervisor Leadership Institute, but now I wish someone had handed it to me ten years ago.

Yes, things have changed since I became a cop, but the behavioral patterns, concepts and ideas discussed in Emotional Survival for Law Enforcement remain the same. Having personally experienced almost every one of the "symptoms" listed in the book, I felt as if I were staring into a mirror with the turn of every page. At the same time, however, by the time I closed the cover, it felt like a great weight had been lifted off of my shoulders. Not only was I NOT ALONE in my experiences, but I was now armed with the knowledge to reverse their negative effects.

It doesn't matter how much experience the reader has, this book is just as appropriate as an academy graduation gift or part of the promotional process. Just as effective as preventative medicine for idealistic rookies, as it is a "shot in the arm" for cynical veterans. There is no "right time" to become an emotional survivor, so start reading!

A must read for law enforcement and their friends and families!

Seriously, a must-read for anyone with a close friend, spouse, or family member that works in law enforcement. It really breaks down the emotional aspect of what working in law enforcement does to a person.

Super and recommend for law enforcement also. This book should be given at orientation for new recruits! It's a book that my spouse and I will read over and over, especially when we're going through a rough patch.

My FAVORITE Law Enforcement book!

This book tops the charts for Law Enforcement must reads in my opinion. I've read several, and while there are several good ones, this one by far is my favorite. Kevin Gilmartin breaks it down exactly how it is, how you can cope as a cop, wife, child, friend, brother and how you as a (in my case a spouse) can support them. He gives you several resources, and also lets you know you're not alone. When I first read the book several years ago it was SUCH a sense of relief that the things my husband was doing, how he was acting, was NORMAL for Law Enforcement, and how me as a wife was able to realize it was the job, not me. Honestly this book saved our marriage. I won't ever get rid of it because I thumb through it from time to time and just get a refresher on things. If you're married to an officer, or have an officer close to you, no question...get and READ this book.

Shae Armstrong is a pop-star princess who was found out on a whim, by chance and never looked back. She has been pushed by her mother, her ex-fianc� and Team Shae who depends on her stardom for their livelihood. She’s the exact opposite of a diva and is actually almost taken advantage of because she won’t speak up for herself. She wants to live for herself, to make her own decisions and follow her new interests.

Nick DeMarco is an extremely wealthy businessman and investor, as he describes himself. But most others believe the rumors of his alleged ties to the mob. He’s only had women who want to be with him for his sexual prowess and his money. He feels as though he is destined to not know a great love and spend the rest of his days alone or with meaningless female encounters.

Shae is unsure about Nick and wants to take their relationship slowly, to learn about each other, to go on dates and spend time together doing normal couple things. But Nick wants everything and wants it all right now. He wants to move at super-sonic speed. They have many issues, both personally and a professionally that they will have to work through.

**Mild Spoilers**
I’m not a fan of insta-love because there is little to no relationship building that happens afterward. Nick was professing his love within days and wanted marriage within a week or two. And then he lamented that she deserved someone better the rest of the book and was willing to give her up for her own good. This got really old, especially when it happens at 90%. It really turned me off of the book.

I could not put this book down! Unpredictable and full of suspense, intrigue, drama and love. The characters were well thought out and I loved the his and hers point of view writing in the book. I felt the chemistry they had and overall really loved this book!

Pop princess meets mob boss, what could go wrong? Must read!!!

Shae Armstrong is a pop princess with a heart of gold. She has a few close friends whom she loves dearly and would do anything for them. She and her best friend, Carrie live in the house Shae bought for her mom who had recently passed away leaving her without any relatives. Shae had already made those closest her family and has known Carrie since kindergarten. Everything in her life has stayed consistent until one day at her best friend, Jason's gym.

Enter Nick DeMarco. He's joining a new gym and meeting with a new trainer. Nick has a questionable background. No one can deny his wealth or his role as dominant male. He is power. Questions surround not only his family but his life style as well. Is he part of the mob or isn't he? How dangerous can one man be?

They meet. You can feel the electricity flowing between them from the start. Shae is being harassed by a fellow gym member until Nick interferes and makes the man leave. He can't take his eyes off her and becomes consumed with getting her to accept a dinner date which leads to drinks at his place. Nick's desire to make her his continues to grow.

Even though most of the people around her try to get her to stay away from Nick, Shae can't deny how much she's drawn to him. He sees the real person behind the pop star and wants nothing but her. She gets pulled into Nick's dangerous world and the longer she stays with him the more dangerous it becomes for her. Nick desperately tries to shield Shae from his world but his enemies won't leave her alone.

This story has a lot of action and a lot of love. Even though Shae has trouble admitting her feelings, she can't let him go. The story of Nick and Shae makes the reader fall in love at the same time their hearts jump into their throat where you're praying everything will be okay. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in Nick and Shae's world. Nikki Belaire captured my heart and kept me at the edge of my seat throughout this book. Through the danger, the loss of friendship, the heart break of love, the addition of one and the betrayals Nikki Belaire kept me guessing as to what would happen next. It's a definite must read!

An excellent and thorough writer's handbook

I am taking a writing course, so I was encouraged by my instructor to purchase a writer's handbook. I have looked over a few, but most were either MLA or APA format but not both. The Essentials of English Writer's Handbook gives both formats as well as a comprehensive index of everything a writer would need to write outstanding essays.

Nice book

I've bought this book because I'm taking a Writing course and my teacher has required it. It seems to be a very good book, with a very diversified content and good "Special Tips" boxes, which have very good explanations and observations. I'm very happy with my purchase, even though I think it should have more practice exercises, I recommend "The Essentials of English" for those who want to learn more about English writing.

About the Author

Steven Adler was the drummer for Guns N' Roses from 1985 to 1990. In 2003, he formed Adler's Appetite and continues to perform with them live. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Carolina Adler.

The real hideous truth of an addict's fall

Dealing with drug addicted family members who lie, cheat and steal--I was excited by Steven Adler's honesty here. He willingly describes to Spagnola the hideous depths of his addiction. Pus filled wounds, shoving and hitting his saintly mother, stealing from his family, ruining his health, his looks, his career with drugs. He does is it all and he loses it all. I was most excited by the honest first person account of the addict told unflinchingly with the finesse of a professional writer who is not a "ghost" but articulately groups all of Adler's mumblings into a narrative.

This book made me really proud that I kicked the addicts out of my life. Because we love our addicted relatives we always feel guilty leaving them, but they can only pull you down into the gutter with them. Excited to read the upcoming book by Adler's mother that Spagnola also co-wrote.

Interesting book- controversial life.

It's difficult to limit my review to the BOOK instead of the AUTHOR because honestly I want so badly to discuss his obvious personal themes throughout his book such as the fact that he comes across so painfully and pathetically irresponsible and unintelligent with his blatant misguidance etc etc. I will instead try to refrain from delving into his personal issues and convey my feelings about this book. It is definitely honest and sincere though painful at times because you feel sorry for this poor fool and lost soul.

The book is written in an almost child-like manner so he must have surely written it himself as I'm sure a ghost writer would have come across sounding a little more mature and professional. At times it really did seem like a kid was writing it- telling you pointless random stories...(It literally almost reads like this: "There was this one time in London and there was this scary guy and I thought he looked scary so I got scared but it turned out he was okay and I went home and was really relieved!") The book is full of these kinds of "stories."

Several times throughout I thought he could have spared us the details of the hookers and porn stars and groupies doing various vulgar things to each other and to him. We know all about sex, drugs and rock-n-roll so no real need to give us all the details. (That was one thing I appreciated about Adler's former bandmate Duff McKagan's book was that he at least kept it a little classier and didn't delve into all the sexual specifics. Some things could be kept private.)

Steven Adler's book also gives us all the druggy details of life in a rock band. One seriously has to wonder though if he really is rehabilitated. He even admits that you'd be delusional in thinking that hitting all these horrendous lows would render his lesson learned. This book is definitely entertaining though tragic because rarely do you see how rock and roll devours some poor lost souls. Most of the tell-all rock star auto-bios now end with how well they are doing and how successful they are with rock music and their sobriety etc. However, this book never kids us into thinking all is now well with the protagonist. He still has many battles to fight and many demons to conquer. Even he knows that conquering them may not be in the cards. It was rather chilling when he admitted that sometimes the only way to escape addiction is to die. How profound and tragic. But I am going on about his life instead of his work...

I enjoyed this book because it was entertaining but as I write that I see how weird it is to find someone's tragedy "entertaining." It wasn't necessarily enjoyable entertaining but interesting entertainment. I did gain some understanding about this person and I have a new-found respect and admiration for him after reading his story. I appreciate his desire to paint a true and sincere portrait of his life. His book is an honest look at his struggle with addiction and a humble tribute to his former bandmates. I found it in poor taste though to air out his dirty laundry involving his mother. For no real reason he states he currently hates her. The book should have left this out. At any rate, I wish him well and thank him for such an honest portrait of a rock and roll life gone severely astray. This makes for a good read whether you are a Guns-n-Roses fan or not. If you enjoy reading about rock stars' lives complete with all the necessary evils- sex, drugs and rock-n-roll- then you will be satisfied with this.

Good read, definitely the craziest of the bunch!!

I have read all of the biographies they have put out to date. I enjoyed each one for the individuality. But, let's face it. The time they are writing about was all drugs and alcohol so how much can they even remember?

The book did a great job of laying out his childhood and how he felt the earlier years of GNR went down. Sometimes, it feels like he is trying to take credit for very minor things just to say he made a contribution (talking them out of doing the glam for instance). His accounts of their maiden trip and events differ greatly from the others. Even his mentions of the Farm Aid incident just don't add up. It is very interesting to read about all of the things that occurred and be able to check them out on YouTube moments after.

I'd definitely recommend this book for any GNR fan. But, if you are were only going to read one, I'd def go with Duff's. Adler has admittedly had a tough run of it since getting kicked out of the band, but he does seem to be humbled at this point.

They also enable one to better develop skills important in taiji and the various martial arts. Best known for his creation of Zhineng Qigong and his powers of healing, Dr Pang was also a high-level taiji practitioner. This book is independent of but can be used in conjunction with The Methods of Zhineng Qigong Science published by Dr Pang in 1992. Like that book, it is translated by Wei Qi Feng, working in conjunction with Patricia Fraser. After completion of the two-year Teacher Training class in 1995, Master Wei was part of the small group chosen to learn new methods from Dr Pang and pass them on to fellow teachers at the Huaxia Centre. He continues to teach Zhineng Qigong and Taiji in China and internationally.

About the Author
Dr Pang was born into a family of taiji and qigong practitioners. He learnt Daoist taiji from a very young age and achieved high gongfu. He became a renowned practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine, but gave this up to create a new qigong system that he thought would be of greater benefit worldwide. He drew on traditional postures and movements but developed and integrated them into more complete and effective methods. He pioneered the use of the qi field and developed a full theory of the laws of the universe, including theories about human life activity and the human mind. Wei Qi Feng has dedicated his life to Zhineng Qigong since he learnt it in 1991 at the age of 17 (when it was known as Flying Crane Form). Some years ago he taught himself English so he could spread its benefits more widely. In 2010 he set up the Harmonious Big Family, joined by other high-level teachers. They run English-language teacher training courses and retreats in China and also teach internationally. Patricia Fraser discovered Zhineng Qigong in 1999. She has worked on a range of Zhineng Qigong texts, including several books. She holds an M.A. in Sociology. This book is a GREAT study tool. Not to mention it's CD and flash cards were very helpful. It also has AMAZING review exercises at the end of each chapter that truly measure how much you have learned. It is easy to understand and filled with info!

This book (for my online class) is basically useless for me

1. To purchase this book is ridiculously expensive for a bunch of terms you can google. These are what I consider "glossary words." Words that just require a definition, and don't require much background info. I will admit that some of the descriptions are helpful.
2. I'm very grateful that Amazon gives a renting option.
3. This book (for my online class) is basically useless for me. If you want just the pure definitions in an online flashcard format, google: "quizlet Medical Terminology Ehrlich." They are flashcards for you to study, and if you find the right ones, some users literally type out EVERY term for you.
Though, I must emphasize that this was the case for my specific class. Some classes depend on this book heavily; it depends on your course.

learning to pray

This book surprised me. Brother Steindl-Rast explained such basic terms such as faith, belief, gratefulness, and prayer in new ways that were clearly understandable to my heart and mind. Though I've searched for years to understand prayer, and have not prayed in years, this book explained the essence of prayer and gratefulness, and the differences between hope and hopes, and faith and belief, that have stuck with me as I continue on my spiritual journey. A very helpful book. I just lent it out to a friend, who told me "thanks" also, for the very reasons I mentioned above.

Heart and soul and mind of Prayer

Brother David Steindl-Rice is a master of spiritual writing. I could stop there, but it would be the shortest review ever. This book is not just for religious. Br David takes one far beyond the basic levels of prayer and intercessions, taking the reader to the better realms of gratitude that teach a life to be lived in holistic fullness. While contemplation is not everyone's approach to God, this book enables an approach for people of any tradition. It is about the heart and mind and soul, alongside the realities of life - if there is any difference. I agree wholeheartedly with the dust jacket: enriching and enlightening. A must on the bookshelf of every religious/spirituality scholar - whatever your level.

Excellent but not an easy read

Many excellent nuggets of truth in this book but it took a re-read for me to get additional understanding. David Steindl-Rast opened my eyes and spirit to be awake and alert to the surprises in life that constantly surround us and thereby develop a spirit of gratitude. His thoughts regarding faith, hope, trust, courage, being one's true self make for excellent reading and reflection. I would definitely recommend this book but the author's depth of thought was a challenge for me. I would love to see this book used in a Book Club or classroom setting where there could be much discussion and exchange of ideas.
