About the Author
Carlos D�az received a BSc from the University of Chile, an MSc from Columbia University, and a PhD from the Imperial College of the University of London. He taught chemical thermodynamics and extractive metallurgy at the University of Chile, where he also held the positions of Head of the Department of Mines and Director of the School of Engineering. In 1975, he joined Inco Limited, where he was responsible for research leading to new copper and nickel smelting and converting processes. He retired from Inco in 1997. At present, Dr. D�az is Director of the Centre for Chemical Process Metallurgy, an industry-university research organization based at the University of Toronto, where he is also an adjunct professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. He is also a private consultant. He is a past-president of the Metallurgical Society of CIM, a fellow of CIM and a member of TMS and the Chilean Institute of Mining Engineers. He is the author or co-author of a book on the thermodynamic properties of copper-slag systems, about 50 technical papers and 15 patents of invention, and co-editor of numerous international conference proceedings, including several of the COPPER–COBRE series of conferences. Dr. D�az is the recipient of a number of Chilean, Canadian and American awards.

Carlos Landolt graduated from the University of Chile as a mining engineer and continued his studies at Pennsylvania State University where he obtained an MSc in metallurgy and PhD in materials sciences. He then taught extractive metallurgy and carried out research at the Department of Mines of the University of Chile and was the first Executive Director of the Centro de Investigaci�n Minera y Metal�rgica. Dr Landolt joined Inco Limited in 1974, becoming Technical Superintendent at the Copper Cliff Smelter and later Superintendent of Process Technology for Ontario Division. Retired from Inco since 1999, he is now an adjunct professor in the School of Engineering of Laurentian University where he teaches operations management, process management and productivity and is involved in the development of distance education programs in operations management. He has participated in all the COPPER–COBRE Conferences since 1987 as author, Organizing Committee member or co-editor of the proceedings. He has also organized several TMS-sponsored conferences and symposia on nickel and copper processing and been co-editor of several volumes of proceedings. Dr Landolt is the author or co-author of more than 30 papers and patents in process metallurgy and productivity. Torstein Utigard is currently a professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering of the University of Toronto where he holds the Gerald R. Heffernan chair in materials processing. After receiving an undergraduate science degree from Oslo University in 1981, he obtained a PhD in metallurgy from the University of Toronto in 1985. He worked, from 1985 to 1987, in Switzerland as a research engineer for Swiss Aluminium Ltd and, from 1987 to 1989, at the metallurgical technology centre of Falconbridge Ltd, in Falconbridge, Canada. He is a former chairman of the non-ferrous pyrometallurgy committee of the Metallurgical Society of CIM. He has published over 100 scientific and technical papers and patents, for which he has received several international best paper awards. In his role as professor, he has graduated more than 15 masters and PhD students.

A Great Work on Treason and Loyalty

While a stream of books are released about the militaristic nature of the Civil War, there are only a handful which deal with the nature of politics in comparison. Those books on politics rarely deal with the subject of treason but now there is an explanation of the term and how it was used during the great conflict. William A. Blair’s With Malice Toward Some deals with the issue of treason and loyalties in the war and the difficulties which it presented. This book is not only a great reference for any Civil War Historian to have on their shelf, but it is a great explanation for those who have been confused about the legal status of treason and the ways in which it was combated during the Civil War.

William A. Blair is a professor of Liberal Arts Research on U.S. History at Pennsylvania State University. He is also the director of the Richards Civil War Era Center and is an editor for the Journal of the Civil War Era which is also published by the University of North Carolina Press. With Malice Toward Some is part of the Littlefield History of the Civil War Era, a sixteen volume series which offers a comprehensive narrative of this era in United States History.

For many who read about the American Civil War, the word treason is thrown around politically quite a bit, but the realization of the effects of the word are different in their meanings than just throwing someone in prison for their treasonous acts. Blair does an excellent job defining for the reader about the many types of treason in a flowing narrative which is quite easy to read. At some points, the reader may feel as though they are reading a law textbook. This should not stop anyone from reading this book, however, since it is one of the advantages of the work. In order to understand about the types of treason, legislative and judicial law must be explained. This type of detail to aid readers is why this book shines as a work on the political front of the Civil War. But beyond treason, he talks about loyalty from both the Union and Confederate side. The constant issues of compliance with the Loyalty Oaths made by certain members of Southern society were not complied with because less than ten percent of the state had not yet given the oath. Taking the Loyalty Oath also opened up the avenue for public ridicule and the status of a social pariah. Blair also spends a chapter on explaining the use and problems with the Provost Marshalls which has been a constant state of debate over the years since the war ended. In a narrative which felt like “who will police the police,” Blair realizes the danger which ensued over the military promoted citizens who felt above the law during the state of war. Blair also deals with politics in the military before 1863 when the Laws of War went into effect, written by Francis Lieber, a German who fled his country because of dangerous political change. The 1863 Laws of War changed many of the issues going on in the army at the time, though the officers and soldiers did not care for them immediately, found solace in their statements as the war went on. Blair concludes this massive undertaking with excellent appendices giving the reader a database of all Court-Martials for treason, disloyalty and Political Arrests Reported in the Newspapers. After reading some examples of treason which I remembered from my studies, I found myself constantly reading the appendices in attempts to see if that person was listed. Overall, after reading this book, there is a better understanding of the word treason and the fine lines which had to be walked before an arrest was made. One such example comes in maritime law dealing with the issues of Privateers. When the Confederacy hired privateers, the men pirating were doing so under the contract of the Confederacy. If the United States tried them, it would be an admittance that the men were under contract from another country therefore recognizing the Confederacy as a nation. It was a fascinating bit of information unknown to most Civil War readers.

I highly recommend this book to any Civil War reader who wishes to know more about the political spectrum of the Civil War. Not only was the narrative quite flowing and easy to read, but the information in the work is unmatched on the subject of treason and loyalty. The wealth of information in the book is so massive that it deserves to be on the bookshelf of any Civil War historian. With Malice Toward Some clarifies many of the issues within Civil War texts concerning arrests and issues of treason and loyalty all around the great conflict.

A well written and researched account of the often nebulous distinction between loyalty and disloyalty during wartime. Focusing on the Civil War era era, this book looks at how loyalty/disloyalty was dealt with by federal and state governments as well as political parties and the general public. It is notable for its fresh perspectives, cogent explanations, and indepth research regarding previously unexplored topics. These include the unprecedented provost marshal system instituted in each Congressional District, the role of the military in Civil War politics, intimidation at the polls especially in the border states, and attempts to punish Confederates and the South generally during Reconstruction. It is well worth the time of anyone interested in these issues and makes a significant advance in Civil War scholarship.

This was very detailed and read more like a text book for a graduate level course on Civil War laws. What was interesting was all the political manuevering that went on during the war and how it played out in the background. There was a lot more than the great Confederate General heroes. The minutia made it hard to read. Still, I read it and enjoyed an aspect of the war I crave to know about because this is an aspect no one reads about or knows anything about.

Love Miranda Vaughn series

I was eagerly awaiting this second Miranda Vaughn book! Just finished it and had to write a review.

As much as I loved Chasing the Dollar, I loved this one even more. The first book was filled with action sequences and danger all around (loved it!) and in this book MIranda is sleuthing in her hometown instead of Macau and other cities abroad. MIranda is working for the lawyer that helped her get acquitted in her high profile fraud trial and still living with her aunt Marie while bouncing back from everything that has happened.
She has not seen Jake Barnes, FBI agent and potential love interest from book 1, in six months.

Enter new client Kathryn, who is worried her boss in a company where she is the CFO is doing something illegal. The Feds have been informed and Kathryn is negotiating immunity for sharing information. One of the agents is Jake Barnes.
While Miranda's boss Rob is on holiday with aunt Marie, Miranda is trying to gather information and helping Kathryn to stay out of trouble. And then there is Quinn, a handsome cowboy and ex-client of Rob.

I enjoyed this book very much. The writing style is pleasant and flows while the plot is interesting and not too complicated. Ellie Ashe has a background in finance and that shows in her books. In Chasing the Dollar I sometimes had a bit of trouble following the plotline, but no such worries here in Dropping the Dime. I would have preferred a little more romance. I like Jake and Miranda together, but it is going really slow. But.... (spoiler warning) things are looking up for my favorite couple.

There was one thing that I thought was a bit stupid. I don't want to give away any spoilers, but searching for stuff without gloves???

In short: great addition to this series. I hope Ms Ashe will be writing fast!

Loved, love, loved it.

Dropping a Dime is at least as good as Ashe’s Chasing the Dollar and I loved that one. Miranda has only seen Jake once in six months but she can’t forget about him. On the other hand, she doesn’t expect him to turn up in the newest case the law firm she works for has accepted. Things have been going well with her job as financial consultant to the lawyer who got her acquitted of federal fraud charges, but if things keep going the way they are on this case, she could end up in prison anyway. And there is a new guy in the picture and he is awesome.

Well paced, good mystery, great chemistry, some real twists, and wonderful writing.

Some will like it, I didn't

I enjoyed the first Miranda Vaughn mystery, but Dropping the Dime (Miranda Vaughn Mysteries Book 2) was too much for me.

The two biggest "too much's" were heroine problems. Miranda has a nose for trouble: she gets into it every time. Her rash moves would lead to prison or death in the real world. Fortunately, she is surrounded by people, both good and bad, who are roughly as incompetent as she is. Second, Miranda is surrounded by handsome, rugged males, and can't look at one without swooning. Are there women like this?

Speaking of women, the cast of females here comprises all kinds of beauties. I suppose it's just as well, since all those handsome males need partners.

The plot was a bit haphazard. There were plenty of twists and turns, but the effect was that of reminding one that the author is in charge. Similarly, the investigation was a bumbling trip from one misleading clue to another.

With a plot and characters like this, one might think the book would be funny. Alas, it failed to trigger my sense of humor (humor is in the eyes of the beholder). Perhaps it was a timing problem.

On the plus side, profanity is sparse and sexual content is minimal, aside from the continual drooling and blushing.

If you like a mixture of unbelievable romance and a simple (though opaque) mystery, you might like this book. I've found a few cozy mysteries that I consider much better than this one: "What's the worst that could happen" by Donald Westlake, "Death by digeridoo" by Barbara Venkataraman, and "Follow the money" by Fingers Murphy (plus a few others among my reviews).

Why Great Teachers Quit

Farber does an excellent job of describing why the professional mortality rate in public school teaching is so high, and why many of the casualties are just those teachers whom we can least afford to lose. The list of reasons is formidable: abuse of standardized testing; teachers powerless to control violence and chaos in the classroom; dilapidated, miserably maintained schools; ever-increasing expectations that must be met with ever-decreasing resources; an inept bureaucracy that is more interested in shifting blame and finding scapegoats than in addressing the problems; compensation that is far less than that available in fields making similar demands for intelligence, training, and skill; parents who micromanage their child's education; parent who don't give two hoots about their child's education; schools and teachers blamed for a host of socioeconomic ills (poverty, family breakdown, etc.) over which they have no control whatsoever. As one who has mentored school science and math projects for years and done a lot of volunteering in the schools, I was not surprised by Farber's extensive and accurate indictments. One of the results I've seen as a university prof has been the tendency of the brighter students to avoid careers in education as if they were the plague. Who wants a job (no longer a profession!) that is viewed with such contempt by our society?

I am less happy with Farber's proposed solutions to these problems. While her solutions are very reasonable, by and large, I fear the chances of their being implemented in America as it exists today are absolutely zero. In the long haul, this breakdown of our educational system will turn the U.S. into a second-rate or third-rate country. American politicians and the American people seem to be very much more interested in finding scapegoats and remaining in denial than in dealing with our badly broken public school system.

A manual for rebuilding relationships

By compiling stories from teachers across the nation, Katy Farber identifies the consistent problems which follow the profession. While the stories may scare some from becoming a teacher, they provide solace to those who have remained in education and provide a base of mutual understanding among teachers, administrators and board members. Why Great Teachers Quit should be read by all groups and used as a workbook to bridge the frustrations and help fix the situations that often send the best into other occupations.
