In the late 1980s, in the USA 7 percent of farm workers were "illegal immigrants" a.k.a. undocumented workers. By 2000, the majority of farm workers in the USA were undocumented. There are millions of farm workers in the USA; most make below minimum wage. This data is from this excellent book. I love all of Charles Stanley's books. How to Handle Adversity is a book that will reinforce God's love and presence in a time when you have doubt. We all go through trials and hard times. Dr. Stanley gives examples of his own hardships, as well as others. God allows circumstances to permeate our lives in order to use it for His glory. However, it's difficult to remember that while in the midst of the storm. The book reinforces that concept.

Lights! Camera! Math!

Your young learner will feel like star while working the sheets in this book. One of the many things I like about the Sylvan line of elementary workbooks is that they use age appropriate examples in their problems which reflect the interests of the target age group. So the dinosaurs, ducks and daisies that populated the Kindergarten Basic Math have been replaced by sports, science and social studies in the 2nd grade edition.

A sense of momentum and accomplishment is built into each page of this workbook with the same idea being generated several different ways. For instance, the section on fractions uses the typical cookie and pizza graphics to introduce the concept. Yet, Sylvan expands on the idea through Kate's Kitchen, a recipe page; to Flag Designer, a coloring exercise using parts and wholes; and Going Green! a recycling challenge that uses fractions to reduce waste.

Sylvan's colorful pages of topical problems that are presented in a fun format make these workbooks a joy to assign to my second grader. He loves outsmarting Roboto the Robot, going to the Farmers Market and buying half and three-quarter bags of exotic fruits and vegetables; winning at Frisbee Fling, all without ever leaving the kitchen table that doubles as his work space.

Other sections such as measuring, regrouping, time and money and graphing all use the same, user-friendly and approachable teaching style. Sylvan does a great job of connecting math to real life fostering life-long learning.

We love Sylvan Learning

This colorful workbook includes all the math topics for a second grader: place value & number sense, addition & subtraction, grouping & sharing, fractions, measurement, time, money, graphs & data. It teaches real world math skills based on Sylvan's proven techniques. My son loves the challenging activities most in this book. From mastering the basics to having fun with newfound skills, this book really helps my son to reach his goals. He is now probably the top math student in her class. In the Beestar online math tests (a nice web site beestar.org), he is ranked high in the honor roll. I'm so glad that I bought this book. Highly recommended!

I homeschool my son and like to use multiple different brands to be sure that his education doesn't have any gaps. This is perfect for a little extra math practice that often feels as much like fun and games as it does schoolwork, and my son enjoys it, too.

“Tudda (history, George Washington Univ.) has produced a book destined to become the benchmark work on the Cold War-era summits. Because of the book's excellent format, it is one of those rare historical works that will be accessible to beginning students, yet also of interest to experts in the field. Tudda covers all of the summits between 1945 and 1991 (Potsdam, Bandung, Glassboro, Beijing, Vienna, and Malta). Each chapter begins by setting the historical stage for the summit, enabling novices to better understand the issues and era in which the summit took place. Taken as a whole, these background pages form a history of cold war issues and relations between the Soviet Union and US, almost constituting a book within the book. Following the background information, Tudda provides detailed descriptions of the summit discussions between US presidents and Soviet premiers or other leaders. In addition to the US-Soviet summits, there are detailed descriptions of the Bandung Summit, which involved Asian and African leaders, as well as the Beijing Summit meetings that involved President Nixon and Mao Zedong. About the Author
Jay Coakley is Professor of Sociology at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. He received his Ph.D and M.A. from the University of Notre Dame in Sociology and received his B.A. from Regis College (Denver). He is published in a wide range of journals and has edited several books including the Handbook of Sports Studies with Eric Dunning for Sage Publications, and given many presentations around the world. He has served on the editorial board for the Sociology of Sport Journal where he was editor for many years. He is currently on the editorial board of the International Review for the Sociology of Sport

digital in a pinch

I started a class while I was deployed and knew that I wasn't going to receive a paper version of this book in time. While I do enjoy reading digital books, I've always preferred highlighter to paper for text books. Well, a kindle version of this book worked perfectly in a pinch. I downloaded the night before class and got an "A" in the class. In the future, I just might do another e-textbook. Oh yeah, the text was written clearly with excellent references. It could easily be a good leisure read. Not bad for a textbook.

About the Author
Linda Meeks and Philip Heit are emeritus professors of Health Education in the College of Education at The Ohio State University. Linda and Philip previously owned Meeks Heit Publishing, a publishing company that specialized in producing health education textbooks, video, CD-ROM, and multimedia programs for grades K-12 and college. Linda and Philip sold Meeks Heit Publishing Company and the McGraw-Hill Companies acquired their product line and works closely with them. Linda and Philip remain actively involved in the health education profession, continuing to write textbooks. To date, they have co-authored more than 250 different health education textbooks that are used by millions of students preschool through college. They have recently produced new editions of Totally Awesome� Health K–8 and Health and Wellness 9–12. Linda and Philip continue to assist state departments of education and as well as thousands of school districts, develop comprehensive school health education curricula and implement the National Health Education Standards. Not as good as it could be....

There are several lesson plans in the back of the book which will be very helpful to a future teacher. However, I was uncomfortable with some of the verbal content within the main structure of this book. It seems to me that the general atmosphere within the book is rather conservative in nature.

1. Some of the extremely conservative overtones within the text can be exemplified below:

a. "In a healthful family, parents or guardians teach their children that sex and love belong together in a committed marriage. The children learn that sex belongs in marriage and to practice delayed gratification." (p. 145)

b. "Children learn that it is not appropriate to be sexually active in their teenage years." (p. 144)

2. Another thing that bothers me is the efforts they have made to include females actually ends up creating negative stereotypes. I guess it's not PC to say "his" to inclusively mean everyone. So rather than say his/her, this books often just says "her". This usage of "her" makes me feel as though the "hims" are not included. What's worse, are when they do the following (these are listed under suicide prevention strategies):

a. "Try to determine what the source of the depression is. Help the person make a list of her strengths and the positive aspects of her life. This person should decide on a plan of action that will relieve her depressed feelings." (p.137)

b. "Rewarding activities provide an opportunity to be productive. The person's self-esteem will be raised, and he will feel rewarded."(p. 137)

3. The beginning of this chapter, Family and Social Health lists the following goals: (p.142)

11. I will develop healthful family relationships

12. I will work to improve difficult family relationships

13. I will make healthful adjustments to family changes

14. I will develop healthy friendships

15. I will develop dating skills

16. I will practice abstinence from sex

17. I will recognize harmful relationships

18. I will develop skills to prepare for marriage

19. I will develop skills to prepare for parenthood

20. I will practice abstinence from sex to avoid the risks of teen

marriage and parenthood

Optional Health Goal: I will learn facts about birth control methods.

These are just a few examples of the overall tone of the book.

Comprehensive Health Education

I had to order this book for a class, but I found it to be extremely educational and interesting. I would recommend it to any teacher or parent as a reference and an excellent resource for information on issues regarding physical, emotional, and social health. This book contains detailed information about many physical illnesses and mental disorders, and allows a teacher or parent to analyze any symptoms a child may have. Some of these disorders include Cancer, STDs, AIDS, ADD, ADHD, Social Anxiety Disorder, OCD, etc. The book also give wonderful guidelines for teaching children how to communicate and use good decision making skills. It is a great book.

Good coursebook. Very informative and filled with various samples and examples. However, it bordered on too much information and

repetitious.
